Treating Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction affects over 30 million men in the U.S., and female sexual arousal disorder affects 47 million women. The American Urological Association meeting in Orlando this week featured promising data on several therapeutics that will impact these two large markets.

Pfizer's Viagra has dominated the erectile dysfunction market, but is now facing competition from Eli Lilly and Icos's Cialis as well as Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline's vardenafil. Data presented at the AUA meeting continues to support approval of these two drugs.

Viagra and Cialis are both being tested for use treating female sexual arousal disorder. In addition, Vivus presented positive data for Alista in this indication.

Although Viagra will be facing increased competition, Pfizer may be able to develop new markets for the drug in addition to a female sexual arousal disorder indication. In a paper published this week, the active ingredient in Viagra was shown to have promise in treating pulmonary hypertension.

In other news, Ebixa (memantine) was approved in Europe for the treatment of Alzheimer disease. U.S. approval is expected, although additional trials may be required.
