Dr. Daniel Bucks, Director of the skin biology
and drug delivery laboratory at Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, speaks on skin
permeation enhancement techniques at AAPS convention in Baltimore
PETALUMA, CA – December 8th 2004:
PETALUMA, CA – Dr. Daniel Bucks, Director of Skin Biology and Drug Delivery at
Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, presented “Skin Permeation Enhancement by
Controlled Abrasion and Stratum Corneum Stripping” at an AAPS roundtable on
November 8th, 2004. The round table, entitled “Unique Methods for Enhancing Drug
Penetration and Permeation into and Through the Skin,” was sponsored by the
Dermatopharmaceutics Focus Group of the American Association of Pharmaceutical
Scientists (AAPS) and was attended by over 200 members who came together to
present and discuss various techniques and technologies for enhancing skin
permeation.
In his presentation, Dr. Bucks stated that many chemical and physical strategies
used in the past generally have not fulfilled their promise to enhance
penetration. However, physical techniques, including needle scoring, tape
stripping and sand paper abrasion are less complicated, less expensive, and
create a more controlled environment for producing positive results. Dr. Bucks
concluded that continued development of these physical disruption techniques
will increase the standard knowledge of permeation enhancement and eventually
will lead to more cost effective means to enhance skin permeation.
Dr. Bucks manages the Skin Biology and Drug Delivery Department at Dow
Pharmaceutical Sciences, a Petaluma, California company that specializes in
development of ethical topical drug products for pharmaceutical and
biotechnology clients, including early stage consultation. Formulations are
optimized using release and permeation studies conducted in Dow’s Skin Biology
and Drug Delivery Laboratory. Dow also provides regulatory strategy development,
non-clinical and clinical study design and management, and regulatory filings
required to take dermatology products from inception through FDA approval.
