Haptogen granted European patent for it’s DBDx™ display technology 9th
July 2004. Haptogen Ltd (Aberdeen, Scotland) announced today that a new European
patent has been granted a on its powerful DBDx™ display technology. Developed
at the renowned Rowett Research Institute and exclusively licensed to Haptogen
in 2003, DBDx - DNA-binding domain extrusion display
- has application for the display and identification of individual clones from
antibody and peptide libraries. The new patent covers the use of DBDx for the
display of proteins including antibody binding sites, the maintenance of large
repertoires of different proteins (1 billion clones) and the selection from
these repertoires of specific therapeutic drug leads. Jim
Reid, CEO of Haptogen said: “Using DBDx technology in combination with our unique Haptomics™
protocols and antibody libraries, we have developed a bio-selection process that
we term FES™ or Forced Epitope Selection. This facilitates the isolation of
highly specific antibodies to targets usually considered beyond the scope of
current immuno-technologies.” Haptogen’s
most advanced development programs are concentrated on the discovery and
development of human antibodies for use against infectious disease organisms.
Compelling proof of principle data, together with positive results from initial
animal studies, suggest that important lead antibodies have been identified
against the signalling molecules of both Gram positive and Gram negative
bacteria. Blocking this signalling stops the bacteria from communicating - if
bacteria cannot communicate, they cannot cause disease. Importantly,
this approach is not directed against the organisms and therefore alleviates the
selective pressure that drives mutation to resistant forms. In
other discovery programmes currently underway at the company, blocking
cell-to-cell signalling in humans with specific, targeted antibodies has shown
significant promise. This is expected to result in novel therapeutics to treat
diseases such as obesity and diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). About

Haptogen
is a drug development company with unique technology and capabilities that
support the development of therapeutic
antibodies to small bioactive compounds or the molecular signature of larger
bio-molecules. Novel classes of therapeutics targeted against a range of
diseases will result. The
company’s novel Haptomics™ and Forced
Epitope Selection™ approaches allow them to deliver unmatched antibody
specificity and affinity. The
team at Haptogen is interested in forging rewarding partnerships in a wide range
