Third Japanese subscriber to
proteome annotation resource
London, UK, March 29, 2004
-- Inpharmatica Ltd, announced today that it has signed a non-exclusive
Biopendium Online [TM] subscription with Taisho Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd.
Biopendium Online [TM], launched
last year, allows subscribers to access Biopendium through a secure internet
connection. Taisho is the third Japanese Biopendium subscriber, and the first
to use the online version.
Researchers at Taisho will be
using Biopendium Online [TM] in their drug discovery efforts. Biopendium
[TM] will give them immediate access to high quality annotation for all the
1.4 million sequences available from 150 different genomes in Biopendium [TM]'s
database. Biopendium [TM] generates a wealth of annotation information
not available elsewhere, including 3D structure and ligand data. This
means it is a valuable aid across a range of popular research problems such
as: microarray annotation, target prioritisation and cloning. Taisho,
and all other subscribers, will also benefit having further improvements in
protein annotation provided to them with each new quarterly Biopendium [TM]
release.
Biopendium [TM] is the advanced
annotation component of PharmaCarta [TM], Inpharmatica's knowledge-based
chemogenomics platform.
Commenting on the announcement, Dr Vimal Mehta, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Inpharmatica, said:
"We are delighted to be
announcing Taisho as our third Biopendium [TM] subscriber in Japan. We
are sure that Taisho will find Biopendium Online [TM] invaluable in assisting
them with their mission to create superior pharmaceuticals. The fact
that we are continuing to add subscribers to our database highlights the need
for this information within the global pharmaceutical industry. We are
fully committed to ensuring that we provide an industry leading resource to
all our customers and consequently will to be making significant enhancements
to this technology in 2004."

About Inpharmatica (www.inpharmatica.com)
Inpharmatica Ltd is a selective
drug discovery company that is applying its expertise in structural and
computational biology, and medicinal chemistry to the identification of
quality drug targets, chemical leads and drug candidates, thereby reducing
attrition in the drug discovery process. The Company's lead discovery
program is focused upon the development of 16 novel Nuclear Receptors
("NR's"), a family of proteins widely considered to be both
druggable and of high therapeutic interest. Drugs targeted against NR's
generate more than $10bn in sales annually. Inpharmatica's novel NR's
represent a more than a 30% increase on those identified in the public domain.
The Company's technology platform,
PharmaCarta [TM], is applied internally and available to collaborative
partners. It's a flexible and integrated chemogenomics suite that links
genomic and proteomic space with chemistry, and provides a unique approach to
hit identification, lead generation and drug optimisation for druggable
targets. This platform utilises the massive computing power of the
Company's 2,500- processor compute farm, one of the largest in the world.
Biopendium [TM] and ADME services, both integral parts of PharmaCarta [TM] are
also available stand-alone. The Company has sales and collaboration
partnerships with leading biotech and pharma companies including Serono,
Pfizer, Daiichi, Riken, Aventis, UCB Pharma, Galapagos and Genentech.
Founded in 1998, Inpharmatica's
technology is based on research from Professor Janet Thornton's group at
University College London. The Company employs some 100 staff at its UK
locations London and on the Cambridge Science Park. To date the Company
has raised some £34.6m from leading venture capitalists including Unibio, 3i,
GIMV, Dresdner Kleinwort Capital, Advent Venture Partners, Abingworth Mgt,
Gilde Investment, Vertex Mgt and Genentech Inc.
About Taisho ( http://www.taisho.co.jp )
Taisho ranks highest in Japan in
OTC drugs. At present, it is aiming to strengthen its position in the
field of prescription pharmaceuticals and is actively expanding its
