Haptogen’s unique approach is set to create valuable new therapeutic compounds.  Small is beautiful…

30th September 2002 : Aberdeen , Scotland. New company, Haptogen Ltd, has overcome the significant technical difficulties associated with raising antibodies to the smallest of small molecules - bioactive haptens. Now, for the first time, anti-hapten therapeutics can be realised.

Haptogen Ltd, formed earlier this year, is a spin-out from Aberdeen University . The founders have world-class scientific expertise in the area of antibody engineering and its application to haptens. This know-how, combined with the team’s proven commercial experience has created a powerful company that is set to open up new opportunities in a wide variety of therapeutic areas. Importantly, the company has a strong IP position with core patents filed and relevant licences in hand.

Antibody engineering has become one of the hottest topics and most productive routes in drug discovery over recent years and it is now widely accepted that this approach can reduce development times and increase potential success, compared to classical drug development. In excess of 200 antibody-based drugs are currently in pre-clinical development and around 70 are in the clinic. Ten therapeutic antibody products have already reached the market. Commercial isolation and production of therapeutic antibody products has been concentrated on larger, protein targets but now the Haptogen team has generated compelling ‘proof of principle’ data and a series of large antibody libraries have been cloned and human anti-hapten antibodies to a range of targets isolated and produced.

Haptogen’s unique hapten-based antibody products will be brought to market either on the company’s own account or with selected partners. Initial development programmes are focussed toward the very large global markets for anti-infective and anti-obesity drugs.
