Southern California's Premier Biomed Investor Conference Will Showcase a Rich Array of Life-Saving Biomedical Technologies
LOS ANGELES, CA -- (INTERNET WIRE) --
02/12/2003 -- The Southern California Biomedical Council (SCBC) will host
its 5th Annual Investment & Strategic Partnering Opportunities
Conference on March 12 & 13, 2003, at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los
Angeles, California.
This Conference will present a number of
Southern California-based biomed/biotech startups interested in raising
capital and/or forging strategic partnerships. Each startup will have 13
minutes to present its technology and business strategy to an audience
composed of investors and biomed/biotech executives. Selected presenters
focus on as diverse technologies and market segments as vascular biology,
drug discovery, stem cell research, implantable devices for cardiac and
ophthalmic applications, diagnostics and ambulatory health data
acquisition, biomemetic surface design, cancer therapeutics and vaccines,
robotic equipment for spinal cord injury patients, and small molecules
targeting zinc finger proteins involved in many infectious diseases.
In addition, the SCBC Investor Conference
will spotlight a number of emerging technologies developed by Southern
California research institutions and ripe for commercialization. One of
these is the BION Project spearheaded by Dr. Gerald Loeb of the University
of Southern California in Los Angeles. This project has resulted in a new
class of implantable medical devices that provide safe, effective, precise
and inexpensive interfaces between electronic controllers and muscles.
These devices will be instrumental in reanimating paralyzed muscles by
electrical stimulation in order to prevent disuse atrophy and restore
functional movement. A poster show to highlight the commercializeable
results of other innovative research conducted at local institutions, such
as Harbor UCLA/Research and Educational Institute, is also planned.
Furthermore, the SCBC Investor Conference
will offer a number of interactive workshops, panel discussions and
breakout sessions designed to provide valuable insights on issues related
to entrepreneurship, company building and technology funding. Topics
include Nanobio -- Beyond the Hype, What is Hot and What is Not in the
Biotech and Medtech Capital Markets, Building Successful Bioscience
Companies, Understanding the Due Diligence Process, Trends in
Capitalization through Partnerships, Negotiating an M&A Deal, and
Accessing SBIR/STTR Grants and Money Allocated to Homeland Security.
In addition to keynote presenters Samuel
Colella of Versant Ventures and Dr. Edward Penhoet of Alta Partners, the
list of confirmed speakers and panelists includes the following:
