The "thousand dollar
genome" ($1000 per re-sequenced human genome in 24
hours) may seem a long way off, but advances in genotyping are
moving fast. Next year it will be just 50 years since the discovery of the
structure of DNA. Solexa, a leading company in the area of whole genome
analysis, based here in the UK, is at the forefront of the next wave of
technical advances in genomic analysis. If you want to find out more there
is a new website at www.solexa.com.
The Company is developing Single Molecular Array(tm)
technology based on work pioneered by scientists at Cambridge University,
UK, that the Company believes will make the technological leap necessary
to measure individual genetic variation across the whole genome on a
routine economical basis. The science is demonstrated in an animation that
can be accessed at http://www.solexa.co.uk/Technology/how%20it%20will%20work.htm.
This area is becoming very topical -
recently Craig Venter, the scientist behind Celera, announced that the
three not for profit research centres he founded will collaborate to build
a new high-throughput genome sequencing centre whose ultimate goal will be
to sequence a human genome in a fraction of the time it currently takes.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if
we can help provide information, you would like to discuss a feature, or
to arrange to speak with the Company.
