Analysis of US Physicians Online Introduction The purpose of this presentation is to deliver the exclusive findings from Datamonitor's 2002 US Physician Insight Surveys. Each survey is used to profile physicians in the US that use the Internet for work-related purposes, highlighting their online information requirements. The presentation also reveals the key differences in Internet usage patterns between the primary care physicians (PCPs) and specialists. Scope The Q1 survey consisted of interviews with PCPs and psychiatrists. 30 interviews were conducted in total. The Q2 survey consisted of interviews with PCPs and cardiologists. 30 interviews were conducted in total. The Q3 survey consisted of interviews with PCPs and oncologists. 30 interviews were conducted in total. The Q4 survey consisted of interviews with PCPs only. A total of 70 interviews were conducted. Report Highlights 82 per cent of surveyed physicians in the US use the Internet for work-related purposes. Companies that successfully align their online services to meet physicians’ unmet needs will achieve greater market uptake in the US. Targeting consumers with information about lifestyle diseases online represents a significant opportunity, as 87 per cent of patients are accessing primarily this type of health information. Also, the provision of email contact between patients and primary care physicians is an example of how companies can support the evolving patient-physician relationship. eDetailing should be integrated with offline activities and should include sampling incentives. Furthermore, companies should target primary care physicians with disease management tools because over 50 per cent of those surveyed encourage their use, (as appropriate for patients).
