Cardiovascular Epidemiology Estimates

Although epidemiology data is crucial in defining patient potential for drugs, reliable cardiovascular data is limited, due to the chronic nature of many conditions. The lack of large-scale national studies and registries continues despite the fact that CV disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. The WHO estimates that 17m people die of cardiovascular disease globally every year.

Scope

Provides 2002 prevalence and incidence data in the seven major markets for a wide range of cardiovascular conditions

Covers cardiovascular risk factors: hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and obesity

Covers cardiovascular disease: heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stable angina and peripheral arterial disease

Covers acute thrombotic events: unstable angina, myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and stroke

Includes estimates of the numbers of a range of cardiovascular procedures performed, including PTCA, CABG, ICD implants and heart transplantation

Report Highlights

Hypercholesterolemia is the most common cardiovascular risk factor, with an average prevalence rate of 43.8% for the seven major markets, representing 309m individuals

Stable angina is estimated to exist in 19.9m individuals in the six major markets (US and top five European countries), with the US accounting for around 43% of stable angina population in these markets. Of the acute thrombotic events considered in this Brief, unstable angina (UA) has the highest overall incidence rate, at 0.33%.

The US has both the highest number and rate of PTCA procedures in 2002, although the rate of PTCA in Japan is also comparatively high and outstrips by far rates observed in European markets
