Plant Biotechnology Opportunities for Research Product Suppliers This report, based on a 26-question survey of over 580 plant scientists, examines the technologies and applications that are currently used in applied plant research. Although hundreds of millions of dollars worth of public and private funds are being invested each year into plant science research, few life science suppliers have aggressively moved to dominate this segment, and hence the tools and techniques specifically designed for plant research lag behind those developed for animal systems. However, like virtually all areas of scientific research, the plant science market is rapidly evolving. As discoveries lead to new lines of investigation and technological advances open up novel ways to study long-standing questions about plant biology, it appears increasingly likely that market opportunities for suppliers are approaching faster than many may have anticipated. The results of this survey indicate that suppliers must develop the foresight to spot unexploited opportunities and stake out a new competitive position. The major objectives of this report are as follows: > Provide a "snapshot" of the research currently done by scientists working in applied plant sciences. > Determine the techniques and applications that are currently used. > Identify the preferred suppliers for this customer segment. > Assess the effect of intellectual property concerns and regulatory oversight on the conduct of plant research. > Identify those areas where suppliers should focus new product development efforts.
