Potential for Cross-Risk Factor Combinations: Targeting Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and Diabetes

Introduction

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality and prevention of acute events is a high priority. Major risk factors include hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. However, patients treated for one or more of these conditions will bear a heavy pill burden, which impacts on compliance. One potential solution to this problem is the development of cross-risk factor fixed dose combinations.

Scope

To assess the prevalence of overlapping CV risk factor indications – dyslipidemia, hypertension and type 2 diabetes

To understand the drivers and barriers to the uptake of fixed dose single pill combination therapy (both in single and multiple indications)

To identify the most likely cross-risk factor single pills in development and profile the key late stage product, Pfizer's Caduet (Lipitor + Norvasc)

To analyze the portfolio potential and pipelines of leading cardiovascular pharma companies to develop fixed dose combinations and multi-modal drugs

Report Highlights

CV risk factors occur in a vast proportion of individuals, with many suffering from more than one disorder. Around 60-65% of diabetics also have hypertension, diabetes co-exists with dyslipidemia in a third of patients, and an even higher proportion of dyslipidemic patients also suffer from hypertension, ranging from 29% in Italy to 55% in the US.

The way individuals at risk from developing CAD are treated is changing. Previously all treatment of cardiovascular risk factors was established on evidence-based medicine, however there is now a trend to move towards treating the overall risk of developing CAD irrespective of the individual components.

The Holy grail for cross-risk factor treatment may lie in the development of multi-modal drugs, which in a single compound, can target a number of risk factors. Examples of this include the AGE Cross-link breakers (hypertension, type 2 diabetes) and dual PPAR agonists (type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia).

Reasons to Purchase

Assess the potential opportunities for cross-risk factor fixed dose combination products as a brand lifecycle management strategy

Understand the future impact and likely level of competition from generic single pill combinations

Identify R&D strategies to focus on the development of novel multi-modal compounds to target a number of underlying pathophysiologies.
