Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Cell-free System
A fractionated cell extract that maintains a biological function. A subcellular fraction isolated by ultracentrifugation or other separation techniques must first be isolated so that a process can be studied free from all of the complex side reactions that occur in a cell. The cell-free system is therefore widely used in cell biology. (From Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2d ed, p166)
Proviruses
Duplex DNA sequences in eukaryotic chromosomes, corresponding to the genome of a virus, that are transmitted from one cell generation to the next without causing lysis of the host. Proviruses are often associated with neoplastic cell transformation and are key features of retrovirus biology.
Animal Communication
Communication between animals involving the giving off by one individual of some chemical or physical signal, that, on being received by another, influences its behavior.
Virus Internalization
The entering of cells by viruses following VIRUS ATTACHMENT. This is achieved by ENDOCYTOSIS, by direct MEMBRANE FUSION of the viral membrane with the CELL MEMBRANE, or by translocation of the whole virus across the cell membrane.
Virus Release
Release of a virus from the host cell following VIRUS ASSEMBLY and maturation. Egress can occur by host cell lysis, EXOCYTOSIS, or budding through the plasma membrane.

Human immunodeficiency virus can spread through target cells by transmission of cell-free virus or directly from cell-to-cell via formation of virological synapses. Although cell-to-cell transmission...
A virus takes an "l" turn to find its receptor.
Virus-receptor interaction represents a crucial step during virus entry. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Neu et al. (2010) identify a receptor motif that engages JC virus, a human polyomavirus...
Viruses and human cancer: from detection to causality.
The study of cancer is incomplete without taking into consideration of tumorigenic viruses. Initially, searches for human cancer viruses were fruitless despite an expansion of our knowledge in the sam...
The Molecular Architecture of HIV.
Assembly of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 is driven by oligomerization of the Gag polyprotein at the plasma membrane of an infected cell, leading to membrane envelopment and budding of an immatu...
Revisiting a role for a mammary tumor retrovirus in human breast cancer.
There is still great controversy as to whether mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV), the etiological agent of mammary cancer in mice, or a closely related human retrovirus, plays a role in the development...

Effects of Intensity of Early Communication Intervention
The purpose of the study is to determine if a more intensive application of communication intervention, i.e. 5 hours per week, will result in more frequent intentional communication acts,...
The Molecular Biology of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH)
This study is designed to better understand the molecular biology of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and to determine if prion protein (PrP) functions in long term hematopoietic...
RATIONALE: A virus called Seneca Valley virus-001 (NTX-010) may be able to kill tumor cells without damaging normal cells. It is not yet known whether NTX-010 is more effective than a plac...
Biology Studies of Hematologic Cancers
This study will collect tumor samples from people with cancers of the blood, bone marrow, or lymph glands for laboratory study of the biology of these conditions. Such studies contribute...
Evaluating an Interactive Cancer Communication System (ICCS) in Lung Cancer
This study will examine the potential for an Interactive Cancer Communication System (ICCS) to impact not only psychosocial outcomes such as quality of life but also length of survival in...
