Early Palliative Care in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

Summary of "Early Palliative Care in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer."

To the Editor: The surprising and encouraging study by Temel and colleagues (Aug. 19 issue)(1) suggests that the early introduction of palliative care prolongs survival among patients with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer. However, two essential points regarding patient demographic characteristics were not reported. First, there were no data regarding the regimens and number of chemotherapy cycles in each group. Could the patients assigned to early palliative care undergo more chemotherapy? Second, the authors did not describe whether the patients assigned to early palliative care, as compared with the patients assigned to standard care, had better performance status after intervention. Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Carcinoma, Bronchogenic

Malignant neoplasm arising from the epithelium of the BRONCHI. It represents a large group of epithelial lung malignancies which can be divided into two clinical groups: SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER and NON-SMALL-CELL LUNG CARCINOMA.

Small Cell Lung Carcinoma

A form of highly malignant lung cancer that is composed of small ovoid cells (SMALL CELL CARCINOMA).

Carcinoma, Non-small-cell Lung

A heterogeneous aggregate of at least three distinct histological types of lung cancer, including SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA; ADENOCARCINOMA; and LARGE CELL CARCINOMA. They are dealt with collectively because of their shared treatment strategy.

Early Detection Of Cancer

Methods to identify and characterize cancer in the early stages of disease and predict tumor behavior.

Palliative Care

Care alleviating symptoms without curing the underlying disease. (Stedman, 25th ed)
