Summary of "Nasal-air conditioning."
We present a review of nasal-air conditioning, a process essential to undisturbed gas exchange and cleansing of the respiratory mucosa in the nose.
A selective literature review was made on the basis of in vivo measurements and computer simulation of the upper airways as well as the authors' own clinical and experimental data. RESULTS AND
Healthy subjects normally breathe through the nose, although the nasal airways have significantly higher airway resistance compared to the oral cavity, which is opened for breathing during exercise, in the case of nasal airway blockage, or in allergic rhinitis. In addition to olfaction, the main tasks of nasal breathing include: cleansing, defense, and conditioning (i.e., humidification and heating). The current knowledge of nasal conditioning processes will be discussed. In addition, research activities of particular relevance for diagnosis and intervention in various pathologies of the upper airways will be presented.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Preparative treatment of transplant recipient with various conditioning regimens including radiation, immune sera, chemotherapy, and/or immunosuppressive agents, prior to transplantation. Transplantation conditioning is very common before bone marrow transplantation.
Nasal Lavage Fluid
Fluid obtained by irrigation or washout of the nasal cavity and NASAL MUCOSA. The resulting fluid is used in cytologic and immunologic assays of the nasal mucosa such as with the NASAL PROVOCATION TEST in the diagnosis of nasal hypersensitivity.
The proximal portion of the respiratory passages on either side of the NASAL SEPTUM. Nasal cavities, extending from the nares to the NASOPHARYNX, are lined with ciliated NASAL MUCOSA.
Nasal Provocation Tests
Application of allergens to the nasal mucosa. Interpretation includes observation of nasal symptoms, rhinoscopy, and rhinomanometry. Nasal provocation tests are used in the diagnosis of nasal hypersensitivity, including RHINITIS, ALLERGIC, SEASONAL.
Reflex closure of the eyelid occurring as a result of classical conditioning.
To understand how variation in nasal architecture accommodates the need for effective conditioning of respired air, it is necessary to assess the morphological interaction between the nasal cavity and...
Natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas and leukemias are aggressive neoplasms. Clinically, they can be classified into nasal, non-nasal and lymphoma/leukemia subtypes. Treatment results are unfavorable. H...
BACKGROUND: A proof-of-concept study suggested that combination therapy with commercial azelastine hydrochloride nasal spray and fluticasone propionate nasal spray significantly improved nasal symptom...
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to improve nasal aesthetics and nasal breathing. The aesthetic improvement of the nose is usually judged subjectively by the patient and the surgeon, but...
We report the results of non-myeloablative (NM) and myeloablative (MA) conditioning for haematopoietic cell transplantation in 207 consecutive AML patients at a single institution. A total of 122 pati...
This is a non-drug, biomarker study to assess the utility of the model of repeated nasal allergen challenges in subjects with atopic rhinitis as a method of inducing an increased response...
The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of nasal sprays and nasal drops. We hypothesize that nasal drops will reach the frontonasal region more often than nasal sprays.
The results of this study will help in the development of a new type of nasal strip for management of nasal congestion and snoring.
This study will compare nasal saline irrigation with nasal saline spray for the treatment of chronic nasal and sinus symptoms. Participants will complete a questionnaire regarding their na...
This study seeks to document differences in nasal irritant sensitivity within the population. The investigators are interested in knowing whether age, gender, and allergy status (nasal al...
