Epicardial adipose tissues reflecting visceral fat accumulations of the heart are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and can be a predictor of other cardiometabolic diseases. It can adversely i...
The prevalence of Down syndrome has increased in the last 30 years; 55% of these children have congenital heart disease.
Concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, peroxiredoxin-1 and glutathione peroxidase activity in the blood plasma of patients with coronary artery disease undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
76 patients with coronary heart disease (who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting) were examined to investigate the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes involved in redox regulation...
: Vasoplegia syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur following cardiopulmonary bypass. Heart transplantation is a recognized risk factor for developing this vasodilatory st...
Aortic atresia and mitral atresia are predictors of adverse events in early life in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, but it is unclear whether late outcomes are also affected, and whethe...
People with cardiovascular risk (CV) factors (obesity, diabetes, etc...) or established heart disease (such as coronary heart disease or chronic heart failure) often have cognitive dysfunc...
There have been many improvements in the care of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). This has helped these children survive longer. Because these children now live longe...
The purpose of the research study "Heart Sounds at Home" is for pregnant SSA or SSA/SSB (Sjögren syndrome B) antibody positive mothers to use a Doppler fetal heart rate monitor to detect ...
Obesity is one of the main causes of the metabolic syndrome, a condition which is becoming more common in Canada and worldwide. Metabolic syndrome is a name for a group of heart disease r...
Heart failure is a condition where the heart does not pump enough blood to the rest of the body. People with heart failure may have another condition called the "metabolic syndrome"( havin...
A pumping mechanism that duplicates the output, rate, and blood pressure of the natural heart. It may replace the function of the entire heart or a portion of it, and may be an intracorporeal, extracorporeal, or paracorporeal heart. (Dorland, 28th ed)
ANGINA PECTORIS or angina-like chest pain with a normal coronary arteriogram and positive EXERCISE TEST. The cause of the syndrome is unknown. While its recognition is of clinical importance, its prognosis is excellent. (Braunwald, Heart Disease, 4th ed, p1346; Jablonski Dictionary of Syndromes & Eponymic Diseases, 2d ed). It is different from METABOLIC SYNDROME X, a syndrome characterized by INSULIN RESISTANCE and HYPERINSULINEMIA, that has increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
A condition caused by underdevelopment of the whole left half of the heart. It is characterized by hypoplasia of the left cardiac chambers (HEART ATRIUM; HEART VENTRICLE), the AORTA, the AORTIC VALVE, and the MITRAL VALVE. Severe symptoms appear in early infancy when DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS closes.
A state of elevated cardiac output due to conditions of either increased hemodynamic demand or reduced cardiac oxygen output. These conditions may include ANEMIA; ARTERIOVENOUS FISTULA; THYROTOXICOSIS; PREGNANCY; EXERCISE; FEVER; and ANOXIA. In time, compensatory changes of the heart can lead to pathological form of high cardiac output and eventual HEART FAILURE.
Abnormal thoracoabdominal VISCERA arrangement (visceral heterotaxy) or malformation that involves additional CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS (e.g., heart isomerism; DEXTROCARDIA) and/or abnormal SPLEEN (e.g., asplenia and polysplenia). Irregularities with the central nervous system, the skeleton and urinary tract are often associated with the syndrome.
