Calcium metabolism disorders simulating rheumatologic diseases.
Summary of "Calcium metabolism disorders simulating rheumatologic diseases."
Hypoparathyroidism and hyperparathyroidism may lead to spondylarthropathy or spondylarthropathy-like problems and crystal arthropathy, respectively. In this report, we present 2 cases with hypoparathyroidism and 1 case with hyperparathyroidism who developed spondylarthropathy-like disease, rheumatoid arthritis-like disease, and chondrocalcinosis, respectively. We briefly discussed relationship between calcium metabolism disorders and rheumatologic manifestations. As rheumatologists, we should be always open to other diagnosis if the treatment does not work in patients with rheumatologic diseases.

Calcium Metabolism Disorders
Disorders in the processing of calcium in the body: its absorption, transport, storage, and utilization.
An inorganic pyrophosphate which affects calcium metabolism in mammals. Abnormalities in its metabolism occur in some human diseases, notably HYPOPHOSPHATASIA and pseudogout (CHONDROCALCINOSIS).
Pyruvate Metabolism, Inborn Errors
Hereditary disorders of pyruvate metabolism. They are difficult to diagnose and describe because pyruvate is a key intermediate in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Some inherited metabolic disorders may alter pyruvate metabolism indirectly. Disorders in pyruvate metabolism appear to lead to deficiencies in neurotransmitter synthesis and, consequently, to nervous system disorders.
Conditions characterized by an alteration in gustatory function or perception. Taste disorders are frequently associated with OLFACTION DISORDERS. Additional potential etiologies include METABOLIC DISEASES; DRUG TOXICITY; and taste pathway disorders (e.g., TASTE BUD diseases; FACIAL NERVE DISEASES; GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL NERVE DISEASES; and BRAIN STEM diseases).
Hemic And Lymphatic Diseases
Hematologic diseases and diseases of the lymphatic system collectively. Hemic diseases include disorders involving the formed elements (e.g., ERYTHROCYTE AGGREGATION, INTRAVASCULAR) and chemical components (e.g., BLOOD PROTEIN DISORDERS); lymphatic diseases include disorders relating to lymph, lymph nodes, and lymphocytes.
Diseases of blood and lymphoreticular system can have multisystem manifestations. Rheumatologic involvement has been reported in association with many benign and malignant haematological disorders; th...
We aimed to evaluate tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) test results for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with rheumatologic diseases prior to anti-TNFα therapy....
Recent advances of the measurement of bone turn over markers contribute to non-invasive assessment of bone-metabolic disorders. We can detect the cause of the metabolic disorders with bone turn over m...
Disorders of mineral metabolism and hypercalcemia are frequent in kidney transplant recipients. Calcium to creatinine (Ca/Cr) clearance ratio was used as a criterion to distinguish between different c...
Inherited disorders of liver metabolism are in general due to single enzyme defects that result in abnormalities in the synthesis or catabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, or lipids. This group of dis...

To determine if low dietary calcium intake and disturbances in maternal calcium metabolism were associated with increases in blood pressure in late pregnancy.
Maximizing calcium retention by the skeleton within the genetic potential is a key strategy to prevent osteoporosis. It has been shown that calcium retention varies between blacks and whi...
