Lipid Management for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.
Summary of "Lipid Management for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease."
Lowering low density lipoprotein (LDL) - cholesterol is one of the key issues in modern preventive cardiology by which we are able to interact with the natural course of atherosclerosis. Diet and healthy life style are mandatory for the treatment of CAD high risk patients. Numerous lipid lowering trials confirmed the beneficial effect of statins in primary as well as secondary prevention. By this statins are the basic treatment in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) or diabetes mellitus or both. In order to reach LDL - cholesterol target levels (LDL - cholesterol < 100 mg/dl) in patients with CAD the use of potent statins or a lipid lowering combination therapy might be necessary to reach the LDL target level. In our days we are able to lower LDL-cholesterol by more than 50% with drug treatment, which should enable us to reach the optimal LDL-cholesterol level in most patients.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Primary Prevention
Specific practices for the prevention of disease or mental disorders in susceptible individuals or populations. These include HEALTH PROMOTION, including mental health; protective procedures, such as COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL; and monitoring and regulation of ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS. Primary prevention is to be distinguished from SECONDARY PREVENTION and TERTIARY PREVENTION.
Secondary Prevention
The prevention of recurrences or exacerbations of a disease that already has been diagnosed. This also includes prevention of complications or after-effects of a drug or surgical procedure.
Pregnancy Complications, Cardiovascular
The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a cardiovascular disease. The disease may precede or follow FERTILIZATION and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or FETUS.
Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (u.s.)
An agency of the UNITED STATES PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE that conducts and supports programs for the prevention and control of disease and provides consultation and assistance to health departments and other countries.
Preventive Medicine
A medical specialty primarily concerned with prevention of disease (PRIMARY PREVENTION) and the promotion and preservation of health in the individual.
