Erosion of an amplatzer septal occluder device into the aortic root.

Summary of "Erosion of an amplatzer septal occluder device into the aortic root."

Atrial septal defects can be closed surgically or percutaneously. We report a patient who underwent percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect with an Amplatzer septal occluder device (AGA Medical Corp, Golden Valley, MN). The patient presented 4 months later with congestive heart failure secondary to an erosion of the Amplatzer septal occluder into the aortic root. The device was removed surgically, and the fistula was repaired. Amplatzer septal occluder indications, selection criteria, and complications are discussed.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Septal Occluder Device

A CATHETER-delivered implant used for closing abnormal holes in the cardiovascular system, especially HEART SEPTAL DEFECTS; or passageways intentionally made during cardiovascular surgical procedures.

Aortic Valve Insufficiency

Pathological condition characterized by the backflow of blood from the ASCENDING AORTA back into the LEFT VENTRICLE, leading to regurgitation. It is caused by diseases of the AORTIC VALVE or its surrounding tissue (aortic root).

Aortic Bodies

Small clusters of chemoreceptive and supporting cells located near the ARCH OF THE AORTA; the PULMONARY ARTERIES; and the coronary arteries. The aortic bodies sense PH; CARBON DIOXIDE; and oxygen concentrations in the BLOOD and participate in the control of RESPIRATION. The aortic bodies should not be confused with the PARA-AORTIC BODIES in the abdomen (which are sometimes also called aortic bodies).

Septum Of Brain

Gray matter structures of the telencephalon and limbic system in the brain, but containing widely varying definitions among authors. Included here is the cortical septal area, subcortical SEPTAL NUCLEI, and the SEPTUM PELLUCIDUM. Many authorities consider the septal region to be made up of the septal area and the septal nuclei, but excluding the septum pellucidum. (Anthoney, Neuroanatomy and the Neurologic Exam, 1994, pp485-489; NeuroNames, http://rprcsgi.rprc.washington.edu/neuronames/index.html (November 18, 1998)).

Para-aortic Bodies

Small masses of chromaffin cells found near the SYMPATHETIC GANGLIA along the ABDOMINAL AORTA, beginning cranial to the superior mesenteric artery (MESENTERIC ARTERY, SUPERIOR) or renal arteries and extending to the level of the aortic bifurcation or just beyond. They are also called the organs of Zuckerkandl and sometimes called aortic bodies (not to be confused with AORTIC BODIES in the THORAX). The para-aortic bodies are the dominant source of CATECHOLAMINES in the FETUS and normally regress after BIRTH.
