Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Oxidative Stress

A disturbance in the prooxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of the former, leading to potential damage. Indicators of oxidative stress include damaged DNA bases, protein oxidation products, and lipid peroxidation products (Sies, Oxidative Stress, 1991, pxv-xvi).

Heart Failure

A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.

Cardiomegaly

Enlargement of the HEART, usually indicated by a cardiothoracic ratio above 0.50. Heart enlargement may involve the right, the left, or both HEART VENTRICLES or HEART ATRIA. Cardiomegaly is a nonspecific symptom seen in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (HEART FAILURE) or several forms of CARDIOMYOPATHIES.

Heart Failure, Systolic

Heart failure caused by abnormal myocardial contraction during SYSTOLE leading to defective cardiac emptying.

Heart Failure, Diastolic

Heart failure caused by abnormal myocardial relaxation during DIASTOLE leading to defective cardiac filling.

Mitochondria as a therapeutic target in heart failure.

Heart failure is a pressing public health problem with no curative treatment currently available. The existing therapies provide symptomatic relief, but are unable to reverse molecular changes that oc...

Pharmacologic Strategies to Target Oxidative Stress in Heart Failure.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are involved in normal physiological functions at low concentrations, can have deleterious effects when produced in excess. Over time, ROS may result in a patholog...

p53-PGC-1alpha pathway mediates oxidative mitochondrial damage and cardiomyocyte necrosis induced by monoamine oxidase-A upregulation: role in chronic left ventricular dysfunction in mice.

Aims-Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction participate together in the development of heart failure. mRNA levels of monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A), a mitochondrial enzyme that produces H2O2, inc...

Mitochondria in heart failure.

This review focuses on the evidence accumulated in humans and animal models to the effect that mitochondria are key players in the progression of heart failure. Mitochondria are the primary source of...

Monoamine oxidase B prompts mitochondrial and cardiac dysfunction in pressure overloaded hearts.

Aims: Monoamine oxidases (MAO) are mitochondrial flavoenzymes responsible for neurotransmitter and biogenic amines catabolism. MAO-A contributes to heart failure progression via enhanced norepinephrin...

Mitochondrial Functions and Oxidative Stress in ALS Patients

In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), malnutrition is frequent (16 to 50 % of the patients) and is an independent prognostic factor. One of the implicated factors is the increase of rest...
