Summary of "Medical reviews before cardiac arrest, medical emergency call or unanticipated intensive care unit admission: their nature and impact on patient outcome."

To measure and describe the extent and consequences of documented medical patient reviews in the 24 hours before a cardiac arrest, medical emergency team (MET) call or an unanticipated intensive care unit admission ("event"), and the use of such reviews as a rapid response system performance measure.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Emergency Medicine

The branch of medicine concerned with the evaluation and initial treatment of urgent and emergent medical problems, such as those caused by accidents, trauma, sudden illness, poisoning, or disasters. Emergency medical care can be provided at the hospital or at sites outside the medical facility.

Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest

Occurrence of heart arrest in an individual when there is no immediate access to medical personnel or equipment.

Emergency Medical Technicians

Paramedical personnel trained to provide basic emergency care and life support under the supervision of physicians and/or nurses. These services may be carried out at the site of the emergency, in the ambulance, or in a health care institution.

Emergency Treatment

First aid or other immediate intervention for accidents or medical conditions requiring immediate care and treatment before definitive medical and surgical management can be procured.

Emergency Medical Services

Services specifically designed, staffed, and equipped for the emergency care of patients.

How many emergency dispatches occurred per cardiac arrest?

BACKGROUND: The Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) is an emergency medical dispatch (EMD) system that is widely used to prioritize 9-1-1 calls and optimize resource allocation. Calls are assigned...

Targeted temperature management for comatose survivors of cardiac arrest.

A 62-year-old man collapses on the street and is found to be in cardiac arrest. He is resuscitated at the scene by emergency medical personnel, but he is comatose. Targeted temperature management, whi...

Population density, call-response interval, and survival of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

ABSTRACT: Background Little is known about the effects of geographic variation on outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The present study investigated the relationship between population...

Analysis of reasons for emergency call delays in Japan in relation to location: High incidence of correctable causes and the impact of delays on patient outcomes.

REVIEW: The interval between collapse and emergency call influences the prognosis of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). To reduce the interval, it is essential to identify the causes of delay. MET...

The heart of the matter: Utility of ultrasound of cardiac activity during traumatic arrest.

The clinical utility of determining cardiac motion on ultrasound has been reported for patients presenting in pulseless medical cardiac arrest. However, the relationship between ultrasound-documented...

Basic Life Support Termination of Resuscitation Implementation Study

In Ontario, most people who experience a cardiac arrest at home (when their heart stops beating) only receive basic life support from Primary Care Paramedics (PCPs) and all are transported...

Evaluation of the Quality of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in Cardiac Arrest Patients

The prognosis of cardiac arrest patients is generally poor. Recent studies have showed that the high quality of CPR increases the survival after cardiac arrest. Therefore the investigators...

Home Use of Automatic External Defibrillators to Treat Sudden Cardiac Arrest

To compare home use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to the use of local emergency medical system in treating survivors of sudden cardiac arrest.

Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation (EPR) for Cardiac Arrest From Trauma

The goal of this study is to rapidly cool trauma victims who have suffered cardiac arrest from bleeding with a flush of ice-cold sodium chloride to preserve the patient to enable surgical...
