Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Laryngeal Masks

A type of oropharyngeal airway that provides an alternative to endotracheal intubation and standard mask anesthesia in certain patients. It is introduced into the hypopharynx to form a seal around the larynx thus permitting spontaneous or positive pressure ventilation without penetration of the larynx or esophagus. It is used in place of a facemask in routine anesthesia. The advantages over standard mask anesthesia are better airway control, minimal anesthetic gas leakage, a secure airway during patient transport to the recovery area, and minimal postoperative problems.

Laryngeal Neoplasms

Cancers or tumors of the LARYNX or any of its parts: the GLOTTIS; EPIGLOTTIS; LARYNGEAL CARTILAGES; LARYNGEAL MUSCLES; and VOCAL CORDS.

Asthma

A form of bronchial disorder with three distinct components: airway hyper-responsiveness (RESPIRATORY HYPERSENSITIVITY), airway INFLAMMATION, and intermittent AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION. It is characterized by spasmodic contraction of airway smooth muscle, WHEEZING, and dyspnea (DYSPNEA, PAROXYSMAL).

Ultrasonography, Doppler, Duplex

Ultrasonography applying the Doppler effect combined with real-time imaging. The real-time image is created by rapid movement of the ultrasound beam. A powerful advantage of this technique is the ability to estimate the velocity of flow from the Doppler shift frequency.

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve

Branches of the vagus (tenth cranial) nerve. The recurrent laryngeal nerves originate more caudally than the superior laryngeal nerves and follow different paths on the right and left sides. They carry efferents to all muscles of the larynx except the cricothyroid and carry sensory and autonomic fibers to the laryngeal, pharyngeal, tracheal, and cardiac regions.

ProSeal™laryngeal mask in normal weight and obese patients : Oxygenation under pressure-controlled ventilation and different end-expiratory pressures.

BACKGROUND: Most of the data on combining pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) come from studies with an endotracheal tube (ETT) whereas data on utilizati...

ProSeal™ LMA Increases Safe Apnea Period in Morbidly Obese Patients Undergoing Surgery under General Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Morbidly obese patients are at risk of hypoxemia at the time of induction of anesthesia. The aim of this study was to assess the possible increase in the safe apnea time with the use of Pr...

Insertion of the ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airway is more successful with the Flexi-Slip™ stylet than with the introducer.

PURPOSE: The ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airway (PLMA™) may be difficult to insert because of its large soft cuff, even when using a dedicated introducer tool. The purpose of this study was to investi...

Removal of the laryngeal mask airway in the post-anesthesia care unit : A means of process optimization?

BACKGROUND: Removal of the laryngeal mask airway in the post-anesthesia care unit could potentially contribute to a faster turnover from one operation to the next. The aim of this study was, therefore...

The 90° rotation technique improves the ease of insertion of the ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airway in children.

BACKGROUND: A previous study using a 180° rotation to insert the ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airway (LMA ProSeal) in children did not show improvement over the standard technique. We used a 90° rotati...
