Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Mitral Valve Insufficiency
Backflow of blood from the LEFT VENTRICLE into the LEFT ATRIUM due to imperfect closure of the MITRAL VALVE. This can lead to mitral valve regurgitation.
Mitral Valve Stenosis
Narrowing of the passage through the MITRAL VALVE due to FIBROSIS, and CALCINOSIS in the leaflets and chordal areas. This elevates the left atrial pressure which, in turn, raises pulmonary venous and capillary pressure leading to bouts of DYSPNEA and TACHYCARDIA during physical exertion. RHEUMATIC FEVER is its primary cause.
Mitral Valve Prolapse
Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA.
Heart Valves
Flaps of tissue that prevent regurgitation of BLOOD from the HEART VENTRICLES to the HEART ATRIA or from the PULMONARY ARTERIES or AORTA to the ventricles.
Fatal Outcome
Death resulting from the presence of a disease in an individual, as shown by a single case report or a limited number of patients. This should be differentiated from DEATH, the physiological cessation of life and from MORTALITY, an epidemiological or statistical concept.
PubMed Articles
Diverticulum of the mitral valve, a rare cause of mitral regurgitation.
Non-infective mitral valve diverticulum is extremely rare. We present a case of intraoperatively diagnosed mitral valve diverticulum of a 69-year-old man presenting with mitral regurgitation who was s...
Comparisons of mitral valve repair with mitral valve replacement for ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) have been limited by differences in preoperative and operative characteristics of patients unde...
The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that mitral valve (MV) enlargement occurring in chronic aortic regurgitation (AR) prevents functional mitral regurgitation (FMR).
Mitral Regurgitation - What Is Best for My Patient?
Mitral regurgitation is common, with 80% of us having some normal valve leakage detectable on echocardiography. Mild regurgitation is well tolerated and rarely leads to overt clinical disease. However...
An unusual case of cor triatriatum sinister presenting as pulmonary oedema during labor.
A 35 years old second gravida was admitted to our department with acute pulmonary oedema after labor. Echocardiography disclosed an intra-atrial membrane prolapsing through the mitral valve in diastol...
Clinical Trials
A Randomized Clinical Trial of Metoprolol in Participants With Mitral Regurgitation.
Mitral valve regurgitation (leakage of the mitral valve of the heart) is frequent and currently there is no specific medical therapy. Mitral regurgitation is a slowly progressive disease...
Repair of Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation: Comparison Between Flexible and Rigid Annuloplasty Rings
Mitral valve repair for ischemic mitral regurgitation is performed primarily by annuloplasty. There is some degree of late failure, which may be due in part to the type of ring employed. W...
Dynamic Annuloplasty System With Activation for the Treatment of Mitral Regurgitation
The device is a dynamic annuloplasty ring/band that is able to be adjusted in order to correct for mitral regurgitation intraoperatively or postoperatively, off-pump.
Plasty or Prosthesis to Treat Functional Mitral Regurgitation
Functional Mitral regurgitation is a now well known entity due to tethering of the valve either mono-lateral, as happens in lateral myocardial infarction, or bilateral as happens in dilate...
Should we Repair Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation?
The purpose of this study is to assess whether adding mitral valve repair to coronary artery bypass grafting improves outcome in patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation.
