Endovascular Management of Mycotic Aortic Aneurysms.

Summary of "Endovascular Management of Mycotic Aortic Aneurysms."

Purpose: We report a single-center experience with the endovascular management of mycotic aortic aneurysms. Case reports: Four cases of mycotic aortic aneurysms are described; all treated with endovascular stent graft with variable configurations. All patients underwent successful placement of stent grafts for their aneurysms. No 30-day perioperative mortality was observed. One patient died during the follow-up period from a cause unrelated to the aneurysm. Conclusion: Repair of mycotic aneurysms can be accomplished with endovascular repair. This may be a valid alternative to open repair particularly in patients who are not candidates for conventional open repair.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Endoleak

Postoperative hemorrhage from an endovascular AORTIC ANEURYSM repaired with endoluminal placement of stent grafts (BLOOD VESSEL PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION). It is associated with pressurization, expansion, and eventual rupture of the aneurysm.

Aortic Bodies

Small clusters of chemoreceptive and supporting cells located near the ARCH OF THE AORTA; the PULMONARY ARTERIES; and the coronary arteries. The aortic bodies sense PH; CARBON DIOXIDE; and oxygen concentrations in the BLOOD and participate in the control of RESPIRATION. The aortic bodies should not be confused with the PARA-AORTIC BODIES in the abdomen (which are sometimes also called aortic bodies).

Heart Aneurysm

A localized bulging or dilatation in the muscle wall of a heart (MYOCARDIUM), usually in the LEFT VENTRICLE. Blood-filled aneurysms are dangerous because they may burst. Fibrous aneurysms interfere with the heart function through the loss of contractility. True aneurysm is bound by the vessel wall or cardiac wall. False aneurysms are HEMATOMA caused by myocardial rupture.

Para-aortic Bodies

Small masses of chromaffin cells found near the SYMPATHETIC GANGLIA along the ABDOMINAL AORTA, beginning cranial to the superior mesenteric artery (MESENTERIC ARTERY, SUPERIOR) or renal arteries and extending to the level of the aortic bifurcation or just beyond. They are also called the organs of Zuckerkandl and sometimes called aortic bodies (not to be confused with AORTIC BODIES in the THORAX). The para-aortic bodies are the dominant source of CATECHOLAMINES in the FETUS and normally regress after BIRTH.

Aortic Valve Insufficiency

Pathological condition characterized by the backflow of blood from the ASCENDING AORTA back into the LEFT VENTRICLE, leading to regurgitation. It is caused by diseases of the AORTIC VALVE or its surrounding tissue (aortic root).
