Summary of "A superior mesenteric vein thrombosis associated with in vitro fertilization."

OBJECTIVE:
To describe a case of superior mesenteric vein thrombosis associated with IVF.
DESIGN:
Case report.
SETTING:
University teaching hospital. PATIENT(S): A 33-year-old female developed progressive abdominal pain several days after ET in her first IVF cycle. A computed tomography scan 12 days after ET showed a superior mesenteric vein thrombosis. INTERVENTION(S): Therapeutic anticoagulation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Resolution of the superior mesenteric vein thrombosis with therapeutic anticoagulation. RESULT(S): Early diagnosis and treatment of a superior mesenteric vein thrombosis associated with IVF led to a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION(S): Endocrine alterations consequent to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation for IVF place patients at risk for thromboembolic events. Thromboembolic events may occur during an IVF cycle in the absence of overt ovarian hyperstimulation, an inherited thrombophilia, or pregnancy. Early diagnosis and treatment of superior mesenteric vein thrombosis can lead to a favorable outcome. Treatment guidelines for superior mesenteric vein thrombosis in setting of IVF are discussed.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Mesenteric Veins

Veins which return blood from the intestines; the inferior mesenteric vein empties into the splenic vein, the superior mesenteric vein joins the splenic vein to form the portal vein.

Portal Vein

A short thick vein formed by union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein.

Upper Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS of an upper extremity vein (e.g., AXILLARY VEIN; SUBCLAVIAN VEIN; and JUGULAR VEINS). It is associated with mechanical factors (Upper Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis, Primary) secondary to other anatomic factors (Upper Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis, Secondary). Symptoms may include sudden onset of pain, warmth, redness, blueness, and swelling in the arm.

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

DUODENAL OBSTRUCTION by the superior mesenteric artery (MESENTERIC ARTERY, SUPERIOR) which travels in the root of the MESENTERY and crosses over the DUODENUM. The syndrome is characterized by the dilated proximal duodenum and STOMACH, bloating, ABDOMINAL CRAMPS, and VOMITING. Often it is observed in patient with body casts after spinal surgery.

Mesenteric Artery, Inferior

The artery supplying nearly all the left half of the transverse colon, the whole of the descending colon, the sigmoid colon, and the greater part of the rectum. It is smaller than the superior mesenteric artery (MESENTERIC ARTERY, SUPERIOR) and arises from the aorta above its bifurcation into the common iliac arteries.
