ABSTRACT:
: Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis and related disorders has been revolutionized by the advent of biological therapy, especially tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitors. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, however, remain the first line of treatment. Evidence has accumulated that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapy of ankylosing spondylitis and related disorders is effective in controlling several of the clinical manifestations seen in these disorders, particularly pain, physical function and perhaps progressive spinal fusion. What needs to be proven, however, is the long-term safety profile of these drugs.

Etodolac

Phenylbutazone
A butyl-diphenyl-pyrazolidinedione that has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and analgesic activities. It has been used in ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS; RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS; and REACTIVE ARTHRITIS.
Oxyphenbutazone
A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Oxyphenbutazone eyedrops have been used abroad in the management of postoperative ocular inflammation, superficial eye injuries, and episcleritis. (From AMA, Drug Evaluations Annual, 1994, p2000) It had been used by mouth in rheumatic disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis but such use is no longer considered justified owing to the risk of severe hematological adverse effects. Spondylitis, Ankylosing
A chronic inflammatory condition affecting the axial joints, such as the SACROILIAC JOINT and other intervertebral or costovertebral joints. It occurs predominantly in young males and is characterized by pain and stiffness of joints (ANKYLOSIS) with inflammation at tendon insertions.
Beclomethasone
An anti-inflammatory, synthetic glucocorticoid. It is used topically as an anti-inflammatory agent and in aerosol form for the treatment of ASTHMA.
