Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Scanning Laser Polarimetry

A technique of diagnostic imaging of RETINA or CORNEA of the human eye involving the measurement and interpretation of polarizing ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES such as radio or light waves. It is helpful in the diagnosis of GLAUCOMA; MACULAR DEGENERATION; and other retinal disorders.

Hemolytic-uremic Syndrome

A syndrome that is associated with microvascular diseases of the KIDNEY, such as RENAL CORTICAL NECROSIS. It is characterized by hemolytic anemia (ANEMIA, HEMOLYTIC); THROMBOCYTOPENIA; and ACUTE RENAL FAILURE.

Mannitol

A diuretic and renal diagnostic aid related to sorbitol. It has little significant energy value as it is largely eliminated from the body before any metabolism can take place. It can be used to treat oliguria associated with kidney failure or other manifestations of inadequate renal function and has been used for determination of glomerular filtration rate. Mannitol is also commonly used as a research tool in cell biological studies, usually to control osmolarity.

Biopsy, Fine-needle

Using fine needles (finer than 22-gauge) to remove tissue or fluid specimens from the living body for examination in the pathology laboratory and for disease diagnosis.

Bardet-biedl Syndrome

An autosomal recessive disorder characterized by RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA; POLYDACTYLY; OBESITY; MENTAL RETARDATION; hypogenitalism; renal dysplasia; and short stature. This syndrome has been distinguished as a separate entity from LAURENCE-MOON SYNDROME. (From J Med Genet 1997 Feb;34(2):92-8)

Successful treatment with rituximab and thalidomide of POEMS syndrome associated with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia.

A POEMS syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin abnormalities including hyperpigmentation and hypertrichosis. Here we...

Characterization of immunoglobulin λ light chain variable region (IGLV) gene and its relationship with clinical features in patients with POEMS syndrome.

Oncocytosis (oncocytomatosis) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of innumerable oncocytic nodules in one or both kidneys, usually associated with the presence of a dominant nodule. An i...

The Role of Percutaneous Renal Biopsy in the Management of Small Renal Masses.

The use of percutaneous renal mass biopsy (RMB) has increased in recent years, likely in parallel with the growing incidence of renal cell carcinoma and small renal masses in particular. Biopsy and im...
