Confused HCl: Hydrogen Chloride or Hydrochloric Acid?
Summary of "Confused HCl: Hydrogen Chloride or Hydrochloric Acid?"
Hydrogen chloride can exist in various forms. Indiscriminative uses of the abbreviation "HCl" for its different forms has led to considerable confusion in the literature. The discovery of hidden solid forms of widely studied molecules by using different forms of hydrogen chloride highlights the need of clarifying the terminology surrounding hydrogen chloride in chemical research.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
A strong corrosive acid that is commonly used as a laboratory reagent. It is formed by dissolving hydrogen chloride in water. GASTRIC ACID is the hydrochloric acid component of GASTRIC JUICE.
Carbonic acid (H2C03). The hypothetical acid of carbon dioxide and water. It exists only in the form of its salts (carbonates), acid salts (hydrogen carbonates), amines (carbamic acid), and acid chlorides (carbonyl chloride). (From Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)
An acid dye used in testing for hydrochloric acid in gastric contents. It is also used histologically to test for AMYLOIDOSIS.
Cell membrane glycoproteins that form channels to selectively pass chloride ions. Nonselective blockers include FENAMATES; ETHACRYNIC ACID; and TAMOXIFEN.
Hydrochloric acid present in GASTRIC JUICE.
The extraction of Au(III) from hydrochloric acid solutions by microemulsion was studied. The extraction experiments were carried out using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant and iso-a...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We aimed to evaluate whether acute esophageal instillation of capsaicin and hydrochloric acid had different effects on distension-induced secondary peristalsis. METHODS: Secondary...
Conformations and electronic states of Hückel-aromatic regular, singly, doubly, and triply N-confused hexaphyrins were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A comparis...
A series of 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) doubly N-confused bilanes were synthesized in a stepwise manner with the aid of sterically demanding N-protecting groups, in which the difference in reactiv...
OBJECTIVES: To clarify the basic mechanism involved in the pathophysiology of cystitis by characterizing the urodynamic parameters, pharmacologically relevant (muscarinic and purinergic) receptors, an...
This study will evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of topical 10% terbinafine hydrogen chloride applied daily versus 5% amorolfine nail lacquer applied twice a week in patients...
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel and prednisolone, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from di...
This study will test the hypothesis that by slightly lowering the acidity of blood (or increasing the pH), dialysis patients utilize protein and amino acids more efficiently.
Patients in critical care often require supplemental potassium chloride if levels in their blood are below acceptable level. Common practice is to administer a single dose of potassium chl...
The purpose of this research study is to test the safety of an oxygen producing gel (produced by combining baking soda and hydrogen peroxide) and see what effects (good and bad) it has on...
