Confused HCl: Hydrogen Chloride or Hydrochloric Acid?
Summary of "Confused HCl: Hydrogen Chloride or Hydrochloric Acid?"
Hydrogen chloride can exist in various forms. Indiscriminative uses of the abbreviation "HCl" for its different forms has led to considerable confusion in the literature. The discovery of hidden solid forms of widely studied molecules by using different forms of hydrogen chloride highlights the need of clarifying the terminology surrounding hydrogen chloride in chemical research.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Hydrochloric Acid
A strong corrosive acid that is commonly used as a laboratory reagent. It is formed by dissolving hydrogen chloride in water. GASTRIC ACID is the hydrochloric acid component of GASTRIC JUICE.
Carbonic Acid
Carbonic acid (H2C03). The hypothetical acid of carbon dioxide and water. It exists only in the form of its salts (carbonates), acid salts (hydrogen carbonates), amines (carbamic acid), and acid chlorides (carbonyl chloride). (From Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)
Congo Red
An acid dye used in testing for hydrochloric acid in gastric contents. It is also used histologically to test for AMYLOIDOSIS.
Chloride Channels
Cell membrane glycoproteins that form channels to selectively pass chloride ions. Nonselective blockers include FENAMATES; ETHACRYNIC ACID; and TAMOXIFEN.
Gastric Acid
Hydrochloric acid present in GASTRIC JUICE.
