Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Cardiac Output

The volume of BLOOD passing through the HEART per unit of time. It is usually expressed as liters (volume) per minute so as not to be confused with STROKE VOLUME (volume per beat).

Total Lung Capacity

The volume of air contained in the lungs at the end of a maximal inspiration. It is the equivalent to each of the following sums: VITAL CAPACITY plus RESIDUAL VOLUME; INSPIRATORY CAPACITY plus FUNCTIONAL RESIDUAL CAPACITY; TIDAL VOLUME plus INSPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME plus functional residual capacity; or tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume plus EXPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME plus residual volume.

Cardiac Volume

The volume of the HEART, usually relating to the volume of BLOOD contained within it at various periods of the cardiac cycle. The amount of blood ejected from a ventricle at each beat is STROKE VOLUME.

Blood Volume

Volume of circulating BLOOD. It is the sum of the PLASMA VOLUME and ERYTHROCYTE VOLUME.

Inspiratory Capacity

The maximum volume of air that can be inspired after reaching the end of a normal, quiet expiration. It is the sum of the TIDAL VOLUME and the INSPIRATORY RESERVE VOLUME. Common abbreviation is IC.

Proof-of Concept Study of Topical 3%-Diclofenac-Nano-Emulsion Cream for Knee OA Pain

This study valuates the safety and efficacy of treatment with 3% Diclofenac Nano-Emulsion Cream versus Placebo in subjects with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Body Composition Monitor in Hemodialysis Patients

Control of volume status is a pivotal issue in haemodialysis therapy. Objective and practical management for maintaining normovolemia is needed. The investigators hypothesized that interv...

Blood Volume and Fluid Kinetics in Patients Undergoing Extracorporal Circulation

In patients undergoing extracorporal circulation during cardiac operation, the hemoglobin is subjected to large changes. The purpose of this study is to see if it is possible with the help...

Estimating Volume Using LiDCO

We hypothesize that the stroke volume variation measured using the commercially available LiDCO monitor provides a reasonable estimate of volume when compared to standard measures. This st...

Safety and Efficacy of Direct Blood Volume Measurement in the Treatment of Heart Failure

Heart failure is a common cardiac condition affecting nearly 6 million Americans. Silent blood volume overload is common in patients with heart failure and is associated with increased ris...
