Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Pulmonary Disease, Chronic Obstructive

A disease of chronic diffuse irreversible airflow obstruction. Subcategories of COPD include CHRONIC BRONCHITIS and PULMONARY EMPHYSEMA.

Pulmonary Heart Disease

Hypertrophy and dilation of the RIGHT VENTRICLE of the heart that is caused by PULMONARY HYPERTENSION. This condition is often associated with pulmonary parenchymal or vascular diseases, such as CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE and PULMONARY EMBOLISM.

Bronchitis, Chronic

A subcategory of CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE. The disease is characterized by hypersecretion of mucus accompanied by a chronic (more than 3 months in 2 consecutive years) productive cough. Infectious agents are a major cause of chronic bronchitis.

Sleep Apnea, Central

A condition associated with multiple episodes of sleep apnea which are distinguished from obstructive sleep apnea (SLEEP APNEA, OBSTRUCTIVE) by the complete cessation of efforts to breathe. This disorder is associated with dysfunction of central nervous system centers that regulate respiration. This condition may be idiopathic (primary) or associated with lower brain stem lesions; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (LUNG DISEASES, OBSTRUCTIVE); HEART FAILURE, CONGESTIVE; medication effect; and other conditions. Sleep maintenance is impaired, resulting in daytime hypersomnolence. Primary central sleep apnea is frequently associated with obstructive sleep apnea. When both forms are present the condition is referred to as mixed sleep apnea (see SLEEP APNEA SYNDROMES). (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p395; Neurol Clin 1996;14(3):611-28)

Vitamin K Deficiency

A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of VITAMIN K in the diet, characterized by an increased tendency to hemorrhage (HEMORRHAGIC DISORDERS). Such bleeding episodes may be particularly severe in newborn infants. (From Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 19th ed, p1182)

Severe vitamin d deficiency: a prerequisite for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease responsiveness to vitamin d supplementation?

Vitamin D status is associated with bone mineral density and functional exercise capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Background. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with several extrapulmonary effects that contribute to the severity of the disease. Vitamin D is suggested to play a role in COPD...

Oral vitamin D replacement is effective in chronic liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: End-stage chronic liver disease is associated with vitamin D deficiency but the prevalence across a broad-spectrum of liver disease is unknown. This study prospectively examines pre...

High doses of vitamin d to reduce exacerbations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a randomized trial.

Background: Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-[OH]D) levels have been associated with lower FEV(1), impaired immunologic control, and increased airway inflammation. Because many patients with chronic...

Simultaneous occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnea: the overlap syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a common disorder in adults associated with several cardiovascular diseases and impaired quality of life. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is also a common cli...

Effect of Supplemental Vitamin D on Skeletal Muscle Function in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Patients

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not vitamin D supplementation can improve physical performance in persons with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Vitamin D as Treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

This project aims to explore the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and COPD progression via a prospective randomized placebo-controlled study. For this purpose, study was powered t...

Study to Evaluate Safety and Efficacy of Inhaled Bimosiamose for the Treatment of Patients With Moderate to Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

The purpose of this study is to determine whether inhalation of Bimosiamose is safe and effective in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease...

Effects of Selenium and Vitamin E Supplements on Lung Function and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of selenium and vitamin E supplements in reducing lung function decline in men.

Efficacy of Helium/Oxygen Compared to Air/Oxygen in Severe Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of Helium/Oxygen (He/O2) 78%/22% compared to a conventional Air/O2 mixture in reducing endotracheal intubation rate and morta...
