Summary of "Nurse-Led Empowerment Strategies for Hypertensive Patients with Metabolic Syndrome."

Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of a nurse-led empowerment-based intervention to that of standard care on metabolic syndrome risk factors, self-management behaviors, and walking activity in Korean hypertensive patients. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental design, patients participated in an experimental group (n = 30) or control group (n = 22). The experimental group received eight weekly empowerment sessions, including lifestyle modification education, empowerment group discussions, and exercise training, while the control group received standard hypertension care. Results: The experimental group had significantly improved metabolic syndrome symptoms and prevalence, empowerment scores, self-management behaviors, and walking (all p < .05). Conclusions: Findings from this study suggest that, in Korean hypertensive patients, empowerment interventions are more effective than standard care in improving metabolic syndrome risk factors, empowerment, self-management behaviors, and walking.

Advanced Practice Nursing

Evidence-based nursing, midwifery and healthcare grounded in research and scholarship. Practitioners include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, and nurse midwives.

Metabolic Syndrome X

A cluster of metabolic risk factors for CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES and TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS. The major components of metabolic syndrome X include excess ABDOMINAL FAT; atherogenic DYSLIPIDEMIA; HYPERTENSION; HYPERGLYCEMIA; INSULIN RESISTANCE; a proinflammatory state; and a prothrombotic (THROMBOSIS) state. Nursing, Team

Coordination of nursing services by various nursing care personnel under the leadership of a professional nurse. The team may consist of a professional nurse, nurses' aides, and the practical nurse.

Aids-associated Nephropathy

Renal syndrome in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients characterized by nephrotic syndrome, severe proteinuria, focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis with distinctive tubular and interstitial changes, enlarged kidneys, and peculiar tubuloreticular structures. The syndrome is distinct from heroin-associated nephropathy as well as other forms of kidney disease seen in HIV-infected patients.

Intracranial Hemorrhage, Hypertensive

Bleeding within the SKULL that is caused by systemic HYPERTENSION, usually in association with INTRACRANIAL ARTERIOSCLEROSIS. Hypertensive hemorrhages are most frequent in the BASAL GANGLIA; CEREBELLUM; PONS; and THALAMUS; but may also involve the CEREBRAL CORTEX, subcortical white matter, and other brain structures.
