Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Hyperinsulinism

A syndrome with excessively high INSULIN levels in the BLOOD. It may cause HYPOGLYCEMIA. Etiology of hyperinsulinism varies, including hypersecretion of a beta cell tumor (INSULINOMA); autoantibodies against insulin (INSULIN ANTIBODIES); defective insulin receptor (INSULIN RESISTANCE); or overuse of exogenous insulin or HYPOGLYCEMIC AGENTS.

Insulin Resistance

Diminished effectiveness of INSULIN in lowering blood sugar levels: requiring the use of 200 units or more of insulin per day to prevent HYPERGLYCEMIA or KETOSIS. It can be caused by the presence of INSULIN ANTIBODIES or the abnormalities in insulin receptors (RECEPTOR, INSULIN) on target cell surfaces. It is often associated with OBESITY; DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS; INFECTION; and certain rare conditions. (from Stedman, 25th ed)

Diet, Carbohydrate-restricted

A diet that contains limited amounts of CARBOHYDRATES. This is in distinction to a regular DIET.

Effect Modifiers (epidemiology)

Factors that modify the effect of the putative causal factor(s) under study.

Diet

Regular course of eating and drinking adopted by a person or animal. This does not include DIET THERAPY, a specific diet prescribed in the treatment of a disease.

Pioglitazone upregulates adiponectin receptor 2 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

Pioglitazone, a full peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ agonist, improves insulin sensitivity by increasing circulating adiponectin levels. However, the molecular mechanisms by which...

Neurological and stress related effects of shifting obese rats from a palatable diet to chow and lean rats from chow to a palatable diet.

Pioglitazone attenuates prostatic enlargement in diet-induced insulin-resistant rats by altering lipid distribution and hyperinsulinemia.

Summary Background and purpose: Increased incidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia among insulin-resistant individuals suggest a role for hyperinsulinemia in prostatic enlargement. We have already re...
