Pulmonary allergic reactions.

Summary of "Pulmonary allergic reactions."

Allergic diseases of the lungs may affect the airways, the pulmonary parenchyma and the pulmonary vessels. The most relevant representatives are allergic asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and the Churg-Strauss syndrome. The type of allergic reaction and the pathophysiological consequences vary considerably between these entities. New drugs target specific mechanisms based on new insights into the pathogenetic processes of the underlying disease.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Pulmonary Aspergillosis

Infections of the respiratory tract with fungi of the genus ASPERGILLUS. Infections may result in allergic reaction (ALLERGIC BRONCHOPULMONARY ASPERGILLOSIS), colonization in pulmonary cavities as fungus balls (MYCETOMA), or lead to invasion of the lung parenchyma (INVASIVE PULMONARY ASPERGILLOSIS).

Alveolitis, Extrinsic Allergic

A common interstitial lung disease caused by hypersensitivity reactions of PULMONARY ALVEOLI after inhalation of and sensitization to environmental antigens of microbial, animal, or chemical sources. The disease is characterized by lymphocytic alveolitis and granulomatous pneumonitis.

Anti-allergic Agents

Agents that are used to treat allergic reactions. Most of these drugs act by preventing the release of inflammatory mediators or inhibiting the actions of released mediators on their target cells. (From AMA Drug Evaluations Annual, 1994, p475)

Aspergillosis, Allergic Bronchopulmonary

Hypersensitivity reaction (ALLERGIC REACTION) to fungus ASPERGILLUS in an individual with long-standing BRONCHIAL ASTHMA. It is characterized by pulmonary infiltrates, EOSINOPHILIA, elevated serum IMMUNOGLOBULIN E, and skin reactivity to Aspergillus antigen.

Dermatitis, Allergic Contact

A contact dermatitis due to allergic sensitization to various substances. These substances subsequently produce inflammatory reactions in the skin of those who have acquired hypersensitivity to them as a result of prior exposure.
