Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Free Radicals
Highly reactive molecules with an unsatisfied electron valence pair. Free radicals are produced in both normal and pathological processes. They are proven or suspected agents of tissue damage in a wide variety of circumstances including radiation, damage from environment chemicals, and aging. Natural and pharmacological prevention of free radical damage is being actively investigated.
Cell-free System
A fractionated cell extract that maintains a biological function. A subcellular fraction isolated by ultracentrifugation or other separation techniques must first be isolated so that a process can be studied free from all of the complex side reactions that occur in a cell. The cell-free system is therefore widely used in cell biology. (From Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2d ed, p166)
Specific Pathogen-free Organisms
Animals or humans raised in the absence of a particular disease-causing virus or other microorganism. Less frequently plants are cultivated pathogen-free.
Free Radical Scavengers
Substances that influence the course of a chemical reaction by ready combination with free radicals. Among other effects, this combining activity protects pancreatic islets against damage by cytokines and prevents myocardial and pulmonary perfusion injuries.
Hemoglobinuria
The presence of free HEMOGLOBIN in the URINE, indicating hemolysis of ERYTHROCYTES within the vascular system. After saturating the hemoglobin-binding proteins (HAPTOGLOBINS), free hemoglobin begins to appear in the urine.

The effect of different hormonal contraceptives on plasma levels of free protein S and free TFPI.
Use of combined oral contraceptives is associated with a three- to six-fold increased risk of venous thrombosis. Hormonal contraceptives induce acquired resistance to activated protein C (APC), which...
Circulating cell-free serum DNA : Significance as a new biomarker for urological malignancies.
The presence of circulating cell-free DNA was demonstrated already in the 1940s. Improved detection methods have led to increased knowledge on cell-free DNA, and recent studies showed that most cancer...
Non-Polar Lipid Components of Human Cerumen.
Human cerumen was separated by column chromatography into the following groups of compounds: hydrocarbons, squalene, wax esters and cholesterol esters, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids, free fatty a...
Limited availability and higher cost of gluten-free foods.
Background: A gluten-free diet is the only treatment for patients with coeliac disease, although it can be burdensome to follow and result in inadequate nutrient intake. The cost and availability o...

Innovative Interventions for Smoking Cessation
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of a combination of the 21 mg nicotine patch and nicotine-free cigarette compared to 21 mg nicotine patch only and nicotine-free cigaret...
The investigators hypothesize that a calcineurin inhibitor-free, steroid-free, co-stimulatory blockade-based immunosuppressive regimen, in combination with a GLP-1 agonist, will reduce the...
The Effect of Periodontal Treatment on the Level of Free Radicals in the Saliva
This study will examine the relationship between free radicals in the saliva and periodontitis. 30 adults, 15 with periodontitis and 15 as a control group will give a sample of saliva befo...
Preservative-Free Tafluprost (MK2452) for Open-Angle Glaucoma/Ocular Hypertension

Lutein and Alzheimer's Disease Study
Oxidative damage by free radicals may be involved in causing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Free radicals may lead to death of nerve cells and decline in brain function. Certain antioxidants ma...
