Nitric Oxide

A free radical gas produced endogenously by a variety of mammalian cells, synthesized from ARGININE by NITRIC OXIDE SYNTHASE. Nitric oxide is one of the ENDOTHELIUM-DEPENDENT RELAXING FACTORS released by the vascular endothelium and mediates VASODILATION. It also inhibits platelet aggregation, induces disaggregation of aggregated platelets, and inhibits platelet adhesion to the vascular endothelium. Nitric oxide activates cytosolic GUANYLATE CYCLASE and thus elevates intracellular levels of CYCLIC GMP.

Nitric Oxide Synthase

An NADPH-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-ARGININE and OXYGEN to produce CITRULLINE and NITRIC OXIDE.

Nitric Oxide Synthase Type I

A CALCIUM-dependent, constitutively-expressed form of nitric oxide synthase found primarily in NERVE TISSUE.

Nitric Oxide Synthase Type Iii

A CALCIUM-dependent, constitutively-expressed form of nitric oxide synthase found primarily in ENDOTHELIAL CELLS.

Nitric Oxide Synthase Type Ii

A CALCIUM-independent subtype of nitric oxide synthase that may play a role in immune function. It is an inducible enzyme whose expression is transcriptionally regulated by a variety of CYTOKINES.

Arginine-Nitric Oxide-Polyamine Metabolism in Periodontal Disease.

Background: Arginine is converted to nitric oxide(NO) via nitric oxide synthase and to ornithine via arginase. Ornithine decarboxylase(ODC) catalyzes the conversion of ornithine to polyamines. Arginas...

Local and cardiorenal effects of periodontitis in nitric oxide-deficient hypertensive rats.

OBJECTIVE: In this study we have assessed the renal and cardiac consequences of ligature-induced periodontitis in both normotensive and nitric oxide (NO)-deficient (L-NAME-treated) hypertensive rats....

Effect of progesterone receptor status on maspin synthesis via nitric oxide production in neutrophils in human breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although progesterone receptor (PR) status, similarly to estrogen receptor status, is of prognostic importance in breast cancer, the involvement of the PR in breast cancer remains obscure....

Periodontitis increases vascular cyclooxygenase-2: potential effect on vascular tone.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It has been demonstrated that periodontitis induces a systemic inflammation, which may impair endothelial function. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an important enzyme in the inf...

Antimicrobial peptide hCAP-18/LL-37 protein and mRNA expressions in different periodontal diseases.

Oral Diseases (2010) doi: 10.1111/j.1601-0825.2010.01704.x Objective: To investigate the levels of antimicrobial peptide hCAP-18/LL-37 protein and mRNA expression in gingival tissues with different pe...
