False positive for malignancy of a lung nodule on FDG PET/CT scans-a lesion with high FDG uptake but stable in size.

Summary of "False positive for malignancy of a lung nodule on FDG PET/CT scans-a lesion with high FDG uptake but stable in size."

A highly F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-avid lung nodule was stable in both size and metabolic activity over 4 months. This was most likely nonneoplastic because a true tumor would grown in volume overtime. The high level of energy consumption was contributing functional activities or by inflammatory cells. Because the speed of tumor growth is proportional to its energy consumption, we consider the higher the metabolic activity of a lesion, the less likely of malignant if it was stable in size over time.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Solitary Pulmonary Nodule

A single lung lesion that is characterized by a small round mass of tissue, usually less than 1 cm in diameter, and can be detected by chest radiography. A solitary pulmonary nodule can be associated with neoplasm, tuberculosis, cyst, or other anomalies in the lung, the CHEST WALL, or the PLEURA.

Blastomycosis

A fungal infection that may appear in two forms: 1, a primary lesion characterized by the formation of a small cutaneous nodule and small nodules along the lymphatics that may heal within several months; and 2, chronic granulomatous lesions characterized by thick crusts, warty growths, and unusual vascularity and infection in the middle or upper lobes of the lung.

Multiple Pulmonary Nodules

A number of small lung lesions characterized by small round masses of 2- to 3-mm in diameter. They are usually detected by chest CT scans (COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY, X-RAY). Such nodules can be associated with metastases of malignancies inside or outside the lung, benign granulomas, or other lesions.

False Positive Reactions

Positive test results in subjects who do not possess the attribute for which the test is conducted. The labeling of healthy persons as diseased when screening in the detection of disease. (Last, A Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed)

Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule

Metastatic lesion of the UMBILICUS associated with intra-abdominal neoplasms especially of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT or OVARY.
