Vitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome: Is There a Link?
Summary of "Vitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome: Is There a Link?"
In addition to bone homeostasis, vitamin D is involved in the physiological functions of several tissues and its insufficiency may contribute to various disorders. Vitamin D status seems to be associated with each of the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS), as well as MetS overall. We review these associations as well as the effects of vitamin D supplementation on MetS.

Metabolic Syndrome X
A cluster of metabolic risk factors for CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES and TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS. The major components of metabolic syndrome X include excess ABDOMINAL FAT; atherogenic DYSLIPIDEMIA; HYPERTENSION; HYPERGLYCEMIA; INSULIN RESISTANCE; a proinflammatory state; and a prothrombotic (THROMBOSIS) state. (from AHA/NHLBI/ADA Conference Proceedings, Circulation 2004; 109:551-556)
A lipid cofactor that is required for normal blood clotting. Several forms of vitamin K have been identified: VITAMIN K 1 (phytomenadione) derived from plants, VITAMIN K 2 (menaquinone) from bacteria, and synthetic naphthoquinone provitamins, VITAMIN K 3 (menadione). Vitamin K 3 provitamins, after being alkylated in vivo, exhibit the antifibrinolytic activity of vitamin K. Green leafy vegetables, liver, cheese, butter, and egg yolk are good sources of vitamin K.
Retinol and derivatives of retinol that play an essential role in metabolic functioning of the retina, the growth of and differentiation of epithelial tissue, the growth of bone, reproduction, and the immune response. Dietary vitamin A is derived from a variety of CAROTENOIDS found in plants. It is enriched in the liver, egg yolks, and the fat component of dairy products.
An isomer of glucose that has traditionally been considered to be a B vitamin although it has an uncertain status as a vitamin and a deficiency syndrome has not been identified in man. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1379) Inositol phospholipids are important in signal transduction.
A six carbon compound related to glucose. It is found naturally in citrus fruits and many vegetables. Ascorbic acid is an essential nutrient in human diets, and necessary to maintain connective tissue and bone. Its biologically active form, vitamin C, functions as a reducing agent and coenzyme in several metabolic pathways. Vitamin C is considered an antioxidant.
Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in susceptibility to the development of metabolic syndrome, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The present study aimed to quantify the association...
In this study, we aimed to estimate serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH-D) in Asian Indians and test for association between 25-OH-D levels, insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MS). Serum 25...
Background Recent evidence indicates that a lower plasma level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) is associated with a higher risk of the metabolic syndrome. It has not been studied in older people wit...
BACKGROUND: Low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with metabolic syndrome. Participants in NHANES III with unexplained elevation in ALT levels have high prevalence of metabolic syndrome. We hyp...
Vitamin D insufficiency has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and dyslipidemia. The data, however, is mostly derived from observational studies and only indicates correlation...
Mechanisms that link metabolic syndrome to atherosclerosis are incompletely understood. As a part of Hämeenlinna Metabolic Syndrome Research Program (HMS), 40 men with metabolic syndrome...
Mechanisms that link metabolic syndrome to atherosclerosis are incompletely understood. As a part of Hämeenlinna Metabolic Syndrome Research Program (HMS) surrogate indicators for atheros...
Obesity is considered as the epidemic of the century. Central obesity is one of the metabolic syndrome's features. It has been proven that obesity can cause back pain and headaches; thus,...
The purpose of this study is to better understand the link between obesity and diabetes or pre-diabetes.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Vitamin D supplementation on the reasons (mechanisms) underlying the development of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome (high blood p...
