Discontinuation of prophylactic drugs to the elderly.
Summary of "Discontinuation of prophylactic drugs to the elderly."
Polypharmacy is common among the elderly and consequences may be adverse drug reactions, interactions and toxicity. At the same time it is well documented that elderly patients are suboptimally treated for conditions such as atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis. When assessing medical treatment one must take into account the remaining life expectancy, time to effect, complication risk related to not treating, risks related to adverse drug effects and interactions, patient preferences and treatment goals.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Polypharmacy
The use of multiple drugs administered to the same patient, most commonly seen in elderly patients. It includes also the administration of excessive medication. Since in the United States most drugs are dispensed as single-agent formulations, polypharmacy, though using many drugs administered to the same patient, must be differentiated from DRUG COMBINATIONS, single preparations containing two or more drugs as a fixed dose, and from DRUG THERAPY, COMBINATION, two or more drugs administered separately for a combined effect. (From Segen, Dictionary of Modern Medicine, 1992)
Housing For The Elderly
Housing arrangements for the elderly or aged, intended to foster independent living. The housing may take the form of group homes or small apartments. It is available to the economically self-supporting but the concept includes housing for the elderly with some physical limitations. The concept should be differentiated from HOMES FOR THE AGED which is restricted to long-term geriatric facilities providing supervised medical and nursing services.

Smoking Cessation
Discontinuation of the habit of smoking, the inhaling and exhaling of tobacco smoke.
Clinical Trial, Phase Ii
