Tuberculosis infection of the talonavicular joint.
Isolated tuberculosis osteomyelitis affecting the foot is extremely rare. Symptoms are nonspecific and haematological investigations are often unhelpful making diagnosis difficult. We report the case of a 41-year-old female who presented with a 7-month history of a painful hindfoot following a minor ankle sprain. Inflammatory markers were mildly raised and initial radiographs showed only some mild narrowing of the talonavicular joint. MRI scanning suggested osteomyelitis centred over the talonavicular joint...
Upward tibiotalar dislocation without fracture: A case report.
Pure tibiotalar dislocations without associated fracture are rare. The authors report a case of an unusual closed tibiotalar dislocation without fracture involving proximal ascension of the talus. Immediate closed reduction was performed. Repair of the disrupted medial ligament was performed and one syndesmosis screw inserted, followed by 6 weeks of immobilization. After 1 year of follow-up, functional results were excellent.
Evaluation of two self-referent foot health instruments.
Two foot health inventories, the Foot Function Index and the Foot Health Status Questionnaire, are evaluated in terms of the developmental procedures used to create them. Both instruments have a number of deficiencies with regard to the initial stages of their development and with their purported reliability and validity. These deficiencies indicate that these instruments may have limited value and that in both clinical and research situations they may not produce sufficiently accurate or informative result...
Traumatic pathologies of the calcaneal peroneal tubercle.
The peroneal tubercle occurs in about one half of human feet. It size varies from a small nodule of less than 1mm height to a prominent spur up to 1cm in size. It had been noted to cause stenosing tenosynovitis of the peroneal tendons, especially in association with an accessory peroneal bone. The current manuscript describes two cases of symptomatic tenosynovitis developing after an ankle sprain with fracture of the peroneal tubercle. The tenosynovitis caused dysfunction of the peroneal tendons unresponsiv...
BACKGROUND: Rearfoot eversion motion and arch height are believed to contribute to increased tension on the plantar fascia and arch collapse during gait but the specifics of these relationships are not clear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships among static arch height, rearfoot eversion, dynamic arch height, and plantar fascia tension. METHODS: 28 healthy males participated. After static arch height was measured, the subjects were asked to run at 4.5m/s while frontal plane rearfoot motion, dynamic arch...
Complete rupture of the peroneus longus tendon secondary to injection.
BACKGROUND: Foot problems are highly prevalent in inflammatory arthritis (IA), especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Chronic inflammation can lead to permanent structural changes, deformity and disability. Early podiatry intervention in RA improves long term outcomes. National guidelines recommend that patients should be treated by a multidisciplinary team with dedicated podiatry services. In clinical practice funding constraints limit availability of these services. OBJECTIVES: To assess prevalence of foot...
Tendon xanthomas usually present over the tendo Achilles and are associated with hyperlipidaemias. A brief review of xanthomas is presented.
