A quantitative study of the influence of inhaled compounds on their concentrations in exhaled breath.

Throughout the development of breath analysis research, there has been interest in how the concentrations of trace compounds in exhaled breath are related to their concentrations in the ambient inhaled air. In considering this, Phillips introduced the concept of 'alveolar gradient' and judged that the measured exhaled concentrations of volatile organic compounds should be diminished by an amount equal to their concentrations in the inhaled ambient air. The objective of the work described in this paper was t...

Photothermal nanodrugs: potential of TNF-gold nanospheres for cancer theranostics.

Nanotechnology has been extensively explored for drug delivery. Here, we introduce the concept of a nanodrug based on synergy of photothermally-activated physical and biological effects in nanoparticle-drug conjugates. To prove this concept, we utilized tumor necrosis factor-alpha coated gold nanospheres (Au-TNF) heated by laser pulses. To enhance photothermal efficiency in near-infrared window of tissue transparency we explored slightly ellipsoidal nanoparticles, its clustering, and laser-induced nonlinear...

Improved Sugar Beet Pectin-Stabilized Emulsions through Complexation with Sodium Caseinate.

The study investigates the complexes formed between sodium caseinate (SC) and sugar beet pectin (SBP) and to harness them to stabilize SBP emulsions. We find that both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are involved in the complexation. In SC/SBP mixed solution, soluble SC/SBP complexes first form on acidification and then aggregate into insoluble complexes, which disassociate into soluble polymers upon further decreasing pH. The critical pH's for the formation of soluble and insoluble complexes and...

A time-resolved spectroscopy and density functional theory study of the solvent dependent photochemistry of fenofibric acid.

The solvent dependent photochemistry of fenofibric acid (FA) was studied by femtosecond transient absorption and nanosecond time-resolved resonance Raman experiments and density functional theory calculations. In acetonitrile-rich solution, a typical nπ* triplet state FA ((3)FA) is formed through a highly efficient intersystem crossing and then the (3)FA species undergoes some reaction with water to generate a ketyl radical intermediate at low water concentrations. In contrast, nπ* (3)FA changes from a re...

Diurnal changes and levels of fibrin generation are not altered by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). A randomised, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In the general population, CVD events peak at 9:00-10:00 AM, associated with diurnal changes in thrombotic potential. However in OSA, these CVD events occur frequently at night. Measuring thrombotic potential across the sleep-wake cycle may provide insight into the temporal association of OSA with CVD. This study aimed to determine diurnal changes in fibrin generation in OSA and whether treatment of OSA with conti...

DNA and protein adducts in human tissues resulting from exposure to tobacco smoke.

Tobacco smoke contains a variety of genotoxic carcinogens that form adducts with DNA and protein in the tissues of smokers. Not only are these biochemical events relevant to the carcinogenic process, but the detection of adducts provides a means of monitoring exposure to tobacco smoke. Characterisation of smoking-related adducts has shed light on the mechanisms of smoking-related diseases and many different types of smoking-derived DNA and protein adducts have been identified. Such approaches also reveal th...

Nutrition and depression in the community-based oldest-old.

The number of older adults continues to increase in all healthcare settings. The majority of older adults are living in the community. Most are dealing with at least one chronic physical illness or mental health concern. Nutritional status and depression, key indicators of overall health, have a complex and interdependent relationship. Clinicians must understand factors that affect nutrition and depression to promote positive health outcomes and enhance the overall quality of life for the oldest-old in the...

Super toner and ink repellent superoleophobic surface.

Offset of imaging material from a fuser surface to paper during fusing is highly undesirable in printing. Here the wetting and repellent characteristics of three imaging materials (a solid wax ink, a waxy polyester toner, and a polyester toner) in their molten states have been studied on three model print surfaces: a transparency (surrogate for paper), a PTFE film, and a model superoleophobic surface, with the aim of assessing their performance in fusing. The superoleophobic surface, with water and hexadeca...

Evidence of Preorganization in Quinonoid Intermediate Formation from l-Trp in H463F Mutant Escherichia coli Tryptophan Indole-lyase from Effects of Pressure and pH.

The effects of pH and hydrostatic pressure on the reaction of H463F tryptophan indole-lyase (TIL) have been evaluated. The mutant TIL shows very low activity for elimination of indole but is still competent to form a quinonoid intermediate from l-tryptophan [Phillips, R. S., Johnson, N., and Kamath, A. V. (2002) Biochemistry 41, 4012-4019]. Stopped-flow measurements show that the formation of the quinonoid intermediate at 505 nm is affected by pH, with a bell-shaped dependence for the forward rate constant,...

Co-administration of morphine and oxycodone vaccines reduces the distribution of 6-monoacetylmorphine and oxycodone to brain in rats.

Opioid conjugate vaccines have shown promise in animal models as a potential treatment for opioid addiction. Individual vaccines are quite specific and each targets only a limited number of structurally similar opioids. Since opioid users can switch or transition between opioids, we studied a bivalent immunization strategy of combining 2 vaccines that could target several of the most commonly abused opioids; heroin, oxycodone and their active metabolites. Morphine (M) and oxycodone (OXY) haptens were conjug...

Molecular characterization of an elicitor-responsive Armadillo repeat gene (GhARM) from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum).

Only a few Armadillo (ARM) repeat proteins have been characterized in plants where they appear to have diverse functions, including the regulation of defence responses. In this study, the identification, cloning and characterization of a gene, encoding an ARM repeat protein (GhARM), is described. GhARM exists as multiple copies in cotton, with an 1713 bp ORF encoding 570 amino acids. The predicted protein contains three consecutive ARM repeats within an Armadillo-type fold, with no other distinguishing dom...
