Long-term results of intratympanic prednisolone injection in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Abstract Conclusion: The results demonstrate the stability of the efficacy over time of the intratympanic prednisolone protocol and they suggest that the spontaneous recovery does not significantly influence the long-term evaluation of intratympanic therapy. A 10-day follow-up after 3 days of intratympanic prednisolone administration can be considered a sufficient period to evaluate the effectiveness of the undertaken therapy. Objective: To assess the stability of the efficacy over time of intratympanic ste...

The role of elective neck dissection during salvage surgery in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract Conclusion: As the occult nodal metastasis ratio is low and there is no statistical benefit of elective neck dissection, elective neck dissection is not always necessary during salvage surgery. However, in patients with N positive at initial treatment and cases developing a recurrence within 1 year, elective neck dissection should be considered during salvage surgery. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ipsilateral or contralateral elective neck dissection during salvage s...

Difference in perception of angular displacement according to applied waveforms.

Abstract Conclusions: This study shows that the differences in the waveforms of angular rotation affect the perception and memory of angular displacement. Objectives: During daily life, when we turn our head during various activities, our brain calculates how much angular displacement our head has undergone. However, how we obtain an accurate estimation of this angular displacement remains unclarified. This study aims to clarify this issue by investigating the perception and memory of passive rotation for t...

Electrocochleography in Meniere's disease: recovery from adaptation of the auditory action potential.

Abstract Conclusions: High prevalence rate of an enhanced summating potential (SP)/action potential (AP) ratio (≥0.35) is considered to result largely from the imbalances of Ca(2+) homeostasis in the endolymphatic space. An increase in Ca(2+) is thought to augment the SP. Furthermore, a greater inflow of Ca(2+) into inner hair cells is supposed to influence the disturbed release of neurotransmitter, which may induce pathological functioning of inner hair cell synapses. We speculate that such abnormal syna...

Can early second-look tympanoplasty reduce the rate of conversion to modified radical mastoidectomy?

Abstract Conclusions: Combined approach tympanoplasty (CAT) allows for successful treatment of cholesteatoma with rates of recurrent and residual disease comparable to open mastoid surgery. Early timing of second-look procedures allows easier removal of any recurrent or residual disease, which reduces the conversion rate to open mastoidectomy. Objectives: The aims of the study were to report the rates of recurrent and residual cholesteatoma following primary CAT surgery and to report the rate of conversion...

Postnatal maturation of contralateral DPOAE suppression in a precocious animal model (chinchilla) of the human neonate.

Abstract Conclusion: In the neonatal chinchilla, the degree of contralateral distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression and the latency and time constants of suppression are immature for 40-60 days. This suggests that olivocochlear efferent innervation of outer hair cells is not fully mature at birth in this animal model, and this may also be the case for human neonates. Objectives: To track postnatal changes in the dynamics of the olivocochlear efferent system in an animal model with cochl...
