Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Mitral Valve Annuloplasty

A type of heart valve surgery that involves the repair, replacement, or reconstruction of the annulus of the MITRAL VALVE. It includes shortening the circumference of the annulus to improve valve closing capacity and reinforcing the annulus as a step in more complex valve repairs.

Mitral Valve Insufficiency

Backflow of blood from the LEFT VENTRICLE into the LEFT ATRIUM due to imperfect closure of the MITRAL VALVE. This can lead to mitral valve regurgitation.

Mitral Valve Prolapse

Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA.

Mitral Valve Stenosis

Narrowing of the passage through the MITRAL VALVE due to FIBROSIS, and CALCINOSIS in the leaflets and chordal areas. This elevates the left atrial pressure which, in turn, raises pulmonary venous and capillary pressure leading to bouts of DYSPNEA and TACHYCARDIA during physical exertion. RHEUMATIC FEVER is its primary cause.

Discrete Subaortic Stenosis

A type of constriction that is caused by the presence of a fibrous ring (discrete type) below the AORTIC VALVE, anywhere between the aortic valve and the MITRAL VALVE. It is characterized by restricted outflow from the LEFT VENTRICLE into the AORTA.

Comparing the Effectiveness of Repairing Versus Replacing the Heart's Mitral Valve in People With Severe Chronic Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation

People with coronary artery disease (CAD) or people who have had a heart attack may develop a leak in the mitral valve of their heart and may therefore need to undergo surgery to fix the v...

Feasibility Study of a Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair System.

Prospective, multi-center, Phase I study of the Evalve Cardiovascular Valve Repair System (CVRS) in the treatment of mitral valve regurgitation. Patients will undergo 30-day, 6 month, 12...

Safety and Efficacy Study of the Sorin 3D Annuloplasty Ring For Mitral Repair

The purpose of this study is to collect data on the effectiveness and clinical outcomes of the MEMO 3D Annuloplasty ring as used for mitral valve repair.

Prospective Study Looking at Quality of Life Measures in Non-ischaemic Cardiomyopathy After Mitral Valve Repair

- Chronic severe mitral regurgitation can lead to symptoms and left ventricular dysfunction. - The purpose of this study is to prospectively follow patients with non-ischaemic...

Moderate Mitral Regurgitation in CABG Patients

Background: The presence of a mild to moderate ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) results in a significantly reduced long-term survival and increased hospitalizations for heart-failure....

Mitral valve replacement is a viable alternative to mitral valve repair for ischemic mitral regurgitation: a case-matched study.

Comparisons of mitral valve repair with mitral valve replacement for ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) have been limited by differences in preoperative and operative characteristics of patients unde...

The lottery of mitral valve repair surgery.

Valve repair, where feasible, rather than valve replacement is the guideline recommended treatment for severe mitral regurgitation. To characterise 'real-world' clinical practice data were reviewed on...

Transventricular mitral valve operations.

We report transventricular mitral valve operations in 2 patients with severe mitral regurgitation and postinfarction left ventricular rupture and pseudoaneurysm. The first patient had direct papillary...

A propensity score-adjusted retrospective comparison of early and mid-term results of mitral valve repair versus replacement in octogenarians.

Aims Feasibility and efficacy of mitral repair in the elderly remain controversial. This study aims to compare outcomes of mitral repair and replacement in octogenarians. Methods and results We compar...

Aortic and Mitral Valve Stenosis with Regurgitation: Not Due to Rheumatic Heart Disease.

The patient is a 13-year-old Mexican-American immigrant who had no previous medical care. Upon arrival to the United States she was diagnosed with severe mitral valve stenosis and regurgitation. In ad...
