23:06 EDT 21st May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

Patients will receive either a gel containing both calcipotriene plus betamethasone or gel with no active ingredients as treatment for their scalp psoriasis for 8 weeks. After this time all patients will receive the gel containing both calcipotriene and betamethasone for 44 weeks. In addition, patients will receive an ointment containing both calcipotriene plus betamethasone as treatment for their psoriasis of the trunk and limbs for 52 weeks.

The objective is to study the short-term efficacy of the gel, and the short and long-term safety of the gel and the ointment.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Betamethasone

A glucocorticoid given orally, parenterally, by local injection, by inhalation, or applied topically in the management of various disorders in which corticosteroids are indicated. Its lack of mineralocorticoid properties makes betamethasone particularly suitable for treating cerebral edema and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p724)

Betamethasone 17-valerate

The 17-valerate derivative of BETAMETHASONE. It has substantial topical anti-inflammatory activity and relatively low systemic anti-inflammatory activity.

Psoriasis

A common genetically determined, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by rounded erythematous, dry, scaling patches. The lesions have a predilection for nails, scalp, genitalia, extensor surfaces, and the lumbosacral region. Accelerated epidermopoiesis is considered to be the fundamental pathologic feature in psoriasis.

Mineral Oil

A mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. It is used as laxative, lubricant, ointment base, and emollient.

Petrolatum

A colloidal system of semisolid hydrocarbons obtained from PETROLEUM. It is used as an ointment base, topical protectant, and lubricant.
