The Effect of Milk Components on the Response to the Pneumonia Vaccine in Senior Citizens

16:57 EDT 18th May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

The purpose of this study is to determine if the daily use of a certain amount and type of milk component for 2 months provides a significant stimulation to the immune system and specifically increases the chances of being protected against pneumonia after the vaccination.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Milk Proteins

The major protein constituents of milk are CASEINS and whey proteins such as LACTALBUMIN and LACTOGLOBULINS. IMMUNOGLOBULINS occur in high concentrations in COLOSTRUM and in relatively lower concentrations in milk. (Singleton and Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed, p554)

Milk Hypersensitivity

Allergic reaction to milk (usually cow's milk) or milk products. MILK HYPERSENSITIVITY should be differentiated from LACTOSE INTOLERANCE, an intolerance to milk as a result of congenital deficiency of lactase.

Riboflavin

Nutritional factor found in milk, eggs, malted barley, liver, kidney, heart, and leafy vegetables. The richest natural source is yeast. It occurs in the free form only in the retina of the eye, in whey, and in urine; its principal forms in tissues and cells are as FLAVIN MONONUCLEOTIDE and FLAVIN-ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE.

Lactation

The processes of milk secretion by the maternal MAMMARY GLANDS after PARTURITION. The proliferation of the mammary glandular tissue, milk synthesis, and milk expulsion or let down are regulated by the interactions of several hormones including ESTRADIOL; PROGESTERONE; PROLACTIN; and OXYTOCIN.

Milk Ejection

Expulsion of milk from the mammary alveolar lumen, which is surrounded by a layer of milk-secreting EPITHELIAL CELLS and a network of myoepithelial cells. Contraction of the myoepithelial cells is regulated by neuroendocrine signals.

The Effect of Whey and Casein on IGFs in Prepubertal Boys

It is not clear which milk compounds are responsible for the growth stimulation. Through short term intervention studies in prepubertal children, we will test the effects of whey, casein,...

Gastrointestinal Toleration of Inulin Products

The intake of inulin products has been linked to multiple health benefits which has lead to inulin fortification in food products. The investigators hypothesis that doses of up to 10 gram...

Hydrolyzed Casein and Whey Protein Supplementation and the Addition of Leucine to Induce Protein Anabolism in Malnourished COPD Patients

The aim of this study is the first aim of a NIH project that consists of 3 aims. The first aim examines the acute effects of two high-quality milk proteins (casein vs. whey) on whole-body...

Safety Study of Infant Formula With Partially Hydrolized Whey

The study will be a randomized, double-blind, prospective trial. Newborn infants (enrollment age 0-14 days) will be assigned randomly to receive one of two products, provided in identical...

Dose Response of Whey and Soy Protein Ingestion With and Without Resistance Exercise in Elderly Men

When we age, we lose muscle. It is not exactly clear why this happens, but we do know that this muscle loss can increase health risks and lead to health problems. Lifting weights (i.e. per...

Impact of Milk Components on Recovery of Viral RNA from MS2 Bacteriophage.

Noroviruses are responsible for approximately 44 % of outbreaks involving dairy products for which causative agents are reported. Recovery of viruses from milk and dairy products is a difficult task....

Straightforward Process for Removal of Milk Fat Globule Membranes and Production of Fat-free Whey Protein Concentrate from Cheese Whey.

A straightforward method for the separation of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) and production of fat-free whey protein concentrate/isolate from cheese whey has been developed. Lowering of the conduct...

Proteomic Analysis of Cow, Yak, Buffalo, Goat and Camel Milk Whey Proteins: Quantitative Differential Expression Patterns.

To aid in unraveling diverse genetic and biological unknowns, a proteomic approach was used to analyze the whey proteome in cow, yak, buffalo, goat, and camel milk based on the isobaric tag for relati...

The glycemic, insulinemic and plasma amino acid responses to equi-carbohydrate milk meals, a pilot- study of bovine and human milk.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Dairy proteins, in particular the whey fraction, exert insulinogenic properties and facilitate glycemic regulation through a mechanism involving elevation of certain plasma amino...

MALDI-TOF MS Characterization of Glycation Products of Whey Proteins in a Glucose/Galactose Model System and Lactose-free Milk.
