Comparative Efficacy of the Suppository Composed by Guaiacol, Eucalyptol, Menthol and Camphor Versus Guaiacol Suppository Versus Guaifenesin Syrup in Pediatric Patients With Cough Due the Infectious Origin

23:41 EDT 22nd May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

It is believed that the suppository consisting of guaiacol, menthol, camphor and eucalyptol, by their pharmacological properties already established for each component, has the ability to reduce the signs and symptoms related to upper respiratory infections in a manner equivalent (not inferior) to medicine used as a comparator in this study and higher than the suppository containing only guaiacol concentration of 12.5 mg.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Guaiacol

An agent thought to have disinfectant properties and used as an expectorant. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p747)

Polyethylene Glycols

Polymers of ETHYLENE OXIDE and water and their ethers. They vary in consistency from liquid to solid, depending on the molecular weight, indicated by a number following the name. They are used as SURFACTANTS, dispersing agents, solvents, ointment and suppository bases, vehicles, and tablet excipients. Some specific groups are lauromagrogols, nonoxynols, octoxynols and poloxamers.

Ceftizoxime

A semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic which can be administered intravenously or by suppository. The drug is highly resistant to a broad spectrum of beta-lactamases and is active against a wide range of both aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It has few side effects and is reported to be safe and effective in aged patients and in patients with hematologic disorders.

Camphor 5-monooxygenase

A soluble cytochrome P-450 enzyme that catalyzes camphor monooxygenation in the presence of putidaredoxin, putidaredoxin reductase, and molecular oxygen. This enzyme, encoded by the CAMC gene also known as CYP101, has been crystallized from bacteria and the structure is well defined. Under anaerobic conditions, this enzyme reduces the polyhalogenated compounds bound at the camphor-binding site.

Poloxamer

A nonionic polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block co-polymer with the general formula HO(C2H4O)a(-C3H6O)b(C2H4O)aH. It is available in different grades which vary from liquids to solids. It is used as an emulsifying agent, solubilizing agent, surfactant, and wetting agent for antibiotics. Poloxamer is also used in ointment and suppository bases and as a tablet binder or coater. (Martindale The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 31st ed)
