An Australian Study of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Crohn's Disease

00:14 EDT 22nd May 2013 | BioPortfolio

Summary

Despite the advent of newer biologic therapies such as infliximab for Crohn's disease, a form of autoimmune inflammatory bowel disease, a proportion of patients are refractory to such therapy and require surgery. The hypothesis is that mesenchymal stromal cell therapy using third party human cultured cells will be safe and effective

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Endometrial Stromal Tumors

Neoplasms of the endometrial stroma that sometimes involve the MYOMETRIUM. These tumors contain cells that may closely or remotely resemble the normal stromal cells. Endometrial stromal neoplasms are divided into three categories: (1) benign stromal nodules; (2) low-grade stromal sarcoma, or endolymphatic stromal myosis; and (3) malignant endometrial stromal sarcoma (SARCOMA, ENDOMETRIAL STROMAL).

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

All tumors in the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT arising from mesenchymal cells (MESODERM) except those of smooth muscle cells (LEIOMYOMA) or Schwann cells (SCHWANNOMA).

Crohn Disease

A chronic transmural inflammation that may involve any part of the DIGESTIVE TRACT from MOUTH to ANUS, mostly found in the ILEUM, the CECUM, and the COLON. In Crohn disease, the inflammation, extending through the intestinal wall from the MUCOSA to the serosa, is characteristically asymmetric and segmental. Epithelioid GRANULOMAS may be seen in some patients.

Granulomatosis, Orofacial

A condition characterized by persistent or recurrent labial enlargement, ORAL ULCER, and other orofacial manifestations in the absence of identifiable CROHN DISEASE; or SARCOIDOSIS. There is no consensus on whether orofacial granulomatosis is a distinct clinical disorder or an initial presentation of Crohn disease.

Wilms Tumor

A malignant kidney tumor, caused by the uncontrolled multiplication of renal stem (blastemal), stromal (STROMAL CELLS), and epithelial (EPITHELIAL CELLS) elements. However, not all three are present in every case. Several genes or chromosomal areas have been associated with Wilms tumor which is usually found in childhood as a firm lump in a child's side or ABDOMEN.
