Extraarticular Distal Radius Fractures, X-fix or Volar Fixation
Summary
Distal radius fractures are treated surgically if severely displaced. This study aims to investigate the outcome after surgery. The investigators will randomize patients to either external fixation with optional addition of k-wires or open reduction and fixation with a volar plate.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Volar Plate
A thick, fibrocartilaginous ligament at the metacarpophalageal joint.
Osteogenesis, Distraction
Bone lengthening by gradual mechanical distraction. An external fixation device produces the distraction across the bone plate. The technique was originally applied to long bones but in recent years the method has been adapted for use with mandibular implants in maxillofacial surgery.
Neural Plate
The region in the dorsal ECTODERM of a chordate embryo that gives rise to the future CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. Tissue in the neural plate is called the neuroectoderm, often used as a synonym of neural plate.
Ilizarov Technique
A bone fixation technique using an external fixator (FIXATORS, EXTERNAL) for lengthening limbs, correcting pseudarthroses and other deformities, and assisting the healing of otherwise hopeless traumatic or pathological fractures and infections, such as chronic osteomyelitis. The method was devised by the Russian orthopedic surgeon Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov (1921-1992). (From Bull Hosp Jt Dis 1992 Summer;52(1):1)
Lens Subluxation
Incomplete rupture of the zonule with the displaced lens remaining behind the pupil. In dislocation, or complete rupture, the lens is displaced forward into the anterior chamber or backward into the vitreous body. When congenital, this condition is known as ECTOPIA LENTIS.

Volar Plating or External Fixation of Dorsally Displaced Fractures of the Distal Radius?
Promising results have been reported after volar locked plating of unstable dorsally displaced fractures of the distal radius. It offers stable fixation and early mobilization. The investi...
Fractures of the distal radius are one of the most common orthopaedic injuries and are associated with a high complication rate. There is a lack of clinical trials comparing the different...
Comparison of Three Fixation Techniques for Displaced Distal Radius Fractures
Distal radius fractures are the most common fracture to occur in the adult population, and those which are displaced but maintain joint congruity are the most common subtype. Locking-plate...
Outcome Study of Complex Distal Radius Fractures
The purpose of this study is to collect information about how people do after different treatments of a broken wrist to see if one treatment has better results.
