Randomized Study of Open Mesh Repair in Local Anesthesia Versus Cost-optimized Laparoscopic Repair for Inguinal Hernia
The purpose of this study is to compare the frequency of long-term post operative pain after an open mesh repair ad modum Lichtenstein performed in local anaesthesia to that after an totally extraperitoneal laparoscopic repair (TEP) for primary inguinal hernia. The investigators will also be assessing the cost for the procedures and hospital care as well as the cost for sick-leave depending on procedure performed.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
An abdominal hernia with an external bulge in the GROIN region. It can be classified by the location of herniation. Indirect inguinal hernias occur through the internal inguinal ring. Direct inguinal hernias occur through defects in the ABDOMINAL WALL (transversalis fascia) in Hesselbach's triangle. The former type is commonly seen in children and young adults; the latter in adults.
A protrusion of abdominal structures through the retaining ABDOMINAL WALL. It involves two parts: an opening in the abdominal wall, and a hernia sac consisting of PERITONEUM and abdominal contents. Abdominal hernias include groin hernia (HERNIA, FEMORAL; HERNIA, INGUINAL) and VENTRAL HERNIA.
A groin hernia occurring inferior to the inguinal ligament and medial to the FEMORAL VEIN and FEMORAL ARTERY. The femoral hernia sac has a small neck but may enlarge considerably when it enters the subcutaneous tissue of the thigh. It is caused by defects in the ABDOMINAL WALL.
The tunnel in the lower anterior ABDOMINAL WALL through which the SPERMATIC CORD, in the male; ROUND LIGAMENT, in the female; nerves; and vessels pass. Its internal end is at the deep inguinal ring and its external end is at the superficial inguinal ring.
A pelvic hernia through the obturator foramen, a large aperture in the hip bone normally covered by a membrane. Obturator hernia can lead to intestinal incarceration and INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION.
The purpose of this study is to assess the early outcomes when using the Biomerix Revive™ as a tension-free onlay patch, Lichtenstein-style, in patients who are candidates for primary, u...
For the present study, 400 consecutive men with unilateral primary inguinal hernia are randomized to Lichtenstein repair using either light weight polypropylene mesh (38g/m2) or light weig...
The purpose of the study is 1. To compare the recurrence rate of the laparoscopic total extra peritoneal inguinal hernia repair without fixation of the mesh to mesh fixation under...
Tension-less mesh repair is the most common procedure for inguinal hernia. Conventional heavy weight polypropylene meshes have been reported to stimulate inflammatory reaction and this is...
This study will determine whether laparoscopic and open hernia repair have the same recurrence and complication rates in the under 60yr old age group. The overall financial costs of each r...
With an incidence of 200,000 new cases per year in Germany, inguinal hernia has a significant socioeconomic impact. The 2009 guidelines from the European Hernia Society established treatment recommend...
PURPOSE: The use of mesh in the surgical repair of adult indirect inguinal hernias is widely recommended in Western countries, but no randomized controlled trials have so far been reported in Japan. T...
PURPOSE: The aim of the present randomized clinical trial was to compare feeling of a foreign body and the early and late outcomes after inguinal hernia repair with the heavyweight (HW) mesh and light...
BACKGROUND: Traditionally, repair of an inguinal hernia has been by an open method, but laparoscopic techniques have recently been introduced and are increasing in popularity. This study aimed to comp...
PURPOSE: To find a method that has all the advantages of laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair but with considerably reduced costs. BACKGROUND: Controversy exits rega...
