Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Analgesia, Epidural

The relief of pain without loss of consciousness through the introduction of an analgesic agent into the epidural space of the vertebral canal. It is differentiated from ANESTHESIA, EPIDURAL which refers to the state of insensitivity to sensation.

Epidural Abscess

Circumscribed collections of suppurative material occurring in the spinal or intracranial EPIDURAL SPACE. The majority of epidural abscesses occur in the spinal canal and are associated with OSTEOMYELITIS of a vertebral body; ANALGESIA, EPIDURAL; and other conditions. Clinical manifestations include local and radicular pain, weakness, sensory loss, URINARY INCONTINENCE, and FECAL INCONTINENCE. Cranial epidural abscesses are usually associated with OSTEOMYELITIS of a cranial bone, SINUSITIS, or OTITIS MEDIA. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p710 and pp1240-1; J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 1998 Aug;65(2):209-12)

Blood Patch, Epidural

The injection of autologous blood into the epidural space either as a prophylactic treatment immediately following an epidural puncture or for treatment of headache as a result of an epidural puncture.

Hematoma, Epidural, Spinal

A rare epidural hematoma in the spinal epidural space, usually due to a vascular malformation (CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM VASCULAR MALFORMATIONS) or TRAUMA. Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma is a neurologic emergency due to a rapidly evolving compressive MYELOPATHY.

Hematoma, Epidural, Cranial

Accumulation of blood in the EPIDURAL SPACE between the SKULL and the DURA MATER, often as a result of bleeding from the MENINGEAL ARTERIES associated with a temporal or parietal bone fracture. Epidural hematoma tends to expand rapidly, compressing the dura and underlying brain. Clinical features may include HEADACHE; VOMITING; HEMIPARESIS; and impaired mental function.

Intravenous Remifentanil Patient-controlled Analgesia (PCA) and Epidural Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia (PCEA) for Labor Analgesia

Women requesting analgesia do not always wish to receive a potent analgesic method, and may fear the risks of epidural analgesia. Study Aim: To determine whether remifentanil is effective...

Effect of Preemptive Epidural Analgesia in Labor on Cytokine Production

During labor there is an increased production of inflammatory mediators called cytokines. Higher concentration of certain cytokines has been linked to adverse neonatal and maternal outcome...

Epidural Labor Analgesia and Infant Neurobehavior

Infant neurobehavior alteration is predictor of later intelligence development. Many factors would influence or are associated with infant neurobehavior, of which exist or appear during pe...

Labor Analgesia in the Latent Phrase

Painless labor is an essential part in woman's health care. Labor analgesia in the active phrase is in popular use currently. However, parturients are still haunted by the labor delivery...

Epidural Analgesia Versus IV Meperidine for Labor Pain Control

60 female that care for pain control during second stage of delivery, will choose between epidural or systemic analgesia. Continuous ECG (3 lead)monitoring will be recorded during the seco...

Ultrasound decreases the failed labor epidural rate in resident trainees.

BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia is widely used for pain relief during labor. The purpose of this study was to determine if ultrasound measurement of the depth from skin to epidural space before the epi...

A survey on informed consent process for epidural analgesia in labor pain in Korea.

BACKGROUND: There is a legal obligation to explain the procedure and use of epidural analgesia in labor primarily due to the possibility of potential risks and associated complications. The present st...

Labor Epidural Analgesia and Maternal Fever.

Women in labor who receive epidural analgesia are more likely to experience hyperthermia and overt clinical fever. The gradual development of modest hyperthermia observed in laboring women with epidur...

Effect of early versus conventional epidural analgesia during labor on cytokine production.

Abstract Objective. To compare the effect of early epidural analgesia (EEA) vs. conventional epidural analgesia (CEA) on cytokine production in mother and neonate. Methods. Healthy parturients wit...

Patient-Controlled Intravenous Analgesia with Remifentanil as an Alternative to Epidural Analgesia during Labor: Case Series and Discussion of Medicolegal Aspects.

BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia is considered as the standard method for labor analgesia by inducing a minimal negative impact on labor while providing effective analgesia. Labor analgesia in the absen...
