Study Comparing One Versus Two Cortisone Injections for Trigger Finger
Summary
Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a painful condition that can cause discomfort and disability. Many physicians choose to locally inject cortisone into the infected finger although there is no current consensus as to how many injections are needed to achieve maximum relief. This study will be a prospective, randomized study to compare one versus two injections for the treatment of trigger finger.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions
Cortisone Reductase
An enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of a ketone and hydroxy group at C-20 of cortisone and other 17,20,21-trihydroxy steroids. EC 1.1.1.53.
Cortisone
A naturally occurring glucocorticoid. It has been used in replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency and as an anti-inflammatory agent. Cortisone itself is inactive. It is converted in the liver to the active metabolite HYDROCORTISONE. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p726)
Prednisone
A synthetic anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid derived from CORTISONE. It is biologically inert and converted to PREDNISOLONE in the liver.
De Quervain Disease
Stenosing tenosynovitis of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis tendons in the first dorsal wrist compartment. The presenting symptoms are usually pain and tenderness at the radial styloid. The cause is almost always related to OVERUSE INJURY or is associated with RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS.
11-beta-hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenases
Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases that catalyzes the reversible conversion of CORTISOL to the inactive metabolite CORTISONE. Enzymes in this class can utilize either NAD or NADP as cofactors.
Clinical Trials
Association of Beta-2 Adrenergic Agonist and Corticosteroid Injection in the Treatment of Lipomas
The purpose of this study is to test whether injected medications will increase the amount of fat released by a fat cell. We will compare prednisolone (a synthetic cortisone) combined wit...
Is Botox Effective in Relieving Pain From Knee Osteoarthritis?
Patients with painful knee osteoarthritis will be randomly allocated to one of three groups. Each group will receive a knee injection of: 1) cortisone, 2) low dose Botox, or 3) high dose B...
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the investigational drug INCB013739 has an effect on systemic and adipose tissue 11-HSD1 activity in obese, insulin resistant subjects.
Cortisol Activity in Patients With Prader-Willi Syndrome and Healthy Controls
The purpose of the study is to find out if people with Prader-Willi syndrome have a difference in the protein which changes inactive cortisone to the active stress hormone cortisol.
Laser-Ranibizumab-Triamcinolone for Diabetic Macular Edema
The purpose of the study is to find out which is a better treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME): laser alone, laser combined with an intravitreal injection of triamcinolone, laser co...
