Review of Molecular Profiling-Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (Rt-Pcr) in Unknown Primary Cancer: Role in Clinical Management and Primary Site Prediction
This will be a retrospective review of 30 patients with unknown primary cancer who have had commercially available RT-PCR assays performed on biopsied tumors, in order to determine if the assay results are consistent with clinical features and useful for planning initial therapy or changing therapy.
Observational Model: Case-Only, Time Perspective: Retrospective

Neoplasms, Unknown Primary
Metastases in which the tissue of origin is unknown.
A cancer registry mandated under the National Cancer Act of 1971 to operate and maintain a population-based cancer reporting system, reporting periodically estimates of cancer incidence and mortality in the United States. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program is a continuing project of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Among its goals, in addition to assembling and reporting cancer statistics, are the monitoring of annual cancer incident trends and the promoting of studies designed to identify factors amenable to cancer control interventions. (From National Cancer Institute, NIH Publication No. 91-3074, October 1990)
Mucocellular carcinoma of the ovary, usually metastatic from the gastrointestinal tract, characterized by areas of mucoid degeneration and the presence of signet-ring-like cells. It accounts for 30%-40% of metastatic cancers to the ovaries and possibly 1%-2% of all malignant ovarian tumors. The lesions may not be discovered until the primary disease is advanced, and most patients die of their disease within a year. In some cases, a primary tumor is not found. Remnant of a tumor or cancer after primary, potentially curative therapy. (Dr. Daniel Masys, written communication)
47-amino acid peptides secreted by ECCRINE GLANDS and having a role in innate cutaneous defense, being antimicrobial to some pathogenic BACTERIA. They are overexpressed by some primary BREAST CANCER cells. They are derived from 110 residue PROTEIN PRECURSORS.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not ye...
RATIONALE: Antineoplastons are naturally-occurring substances that may also be made in the laboratory. Antineoplastons may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial...
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. PURPOS...
This study is for patients with a type of cancer called carcinoma of unknown primary site (CUP), meaning that the site of the body where the tumor has originated is not clear. Currently, c...
Primary objectives: 1. To determine the overall tumor response rate with oxaliplatin in combination with gemcitabine (GEMOX) as first line and second line therapy in unknown primar...
INTRODUCTION: Secondary malignancies and chronic end-organ sequelae are significant and steadily rising consequences of cancer therapy. The workup and management of a carcinoma of unknown primary must...
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: To evaluate the expression and differential significance of c-Jun, p73, Casp-9 and N-ras in thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) with the aim to provide useful information for tumor b...
Background. We conducted a retrospective review of patients with unknown primary head and neck cancer who underwent a transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) assisted search for an occult tumor. Methods. F...
PURPOSE: Lung cancers account for 5 % of second primary cancers after breast cancer. The low overall 5-year relative survival rate of lung cancer makes it a particularly concerning new malignancy for...
BACKGROUND: Primary unknown cancer (PUC) is not rare neoplasm. The clinical features and survival time of these patients are heterogeneous. We analyzed cases that were referred to the National Cancer...
